Things to Consider About Buying a Bath Tub

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

I imagine most people never replace their bath tubs because what can go wrong? Most bath tubs don't suddenly break apart, unless, of course, you are unfortunate enough to have one of those fiberglass or acrylic bath tubs. Especially those one-piece tubs with seams that can separate. Or, you live in Hawaii.

Many people in Hawaii remove their tubs completely and install showers. Others, if the finish chips because they've dropped, say, an anvil in the tub, well, you can get your tub refinished. It's more cost effective to refinish the tub than try to remove a heavy cast iron tub and replace it. But I have discovered there are cast iron bath tubs, and then there are good cast iron bath tubs.

First you have to decide what type of tub. Its configuration style, and there are many. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: My Adventure of Buying a New Bath Tub in Hawaii.

Gee Elizabeth-other than the tubs that I've purchased that were already in the house, I've never just bought a tub. I have a friend who bought an old tub with claw feet that had been painted a beautiful shade of violet.

Several of my investors have had older cast iron bathtubs refinished. Unfortunately the finishes don't last but a few years. Showers are replacing these older tubs with deluxe tile showers. This gives the baths are new, fresh looks.

Kathy Streib I really thought you of all people would enjoy the blog about the tub. LOL. I was waiting for the hate mail but it hasn't yet come.

Debbie Reynolds I notice when traveling that many Millennial hotels (meaning hotels that cater to Millennials) do not offer tubs anymore. Only showers. I won't stay at them. I want my tub.

Good morning, Elizabeth... (love the picture). You are so right that most of us never replace tubs. Of course, I've built my last two homes so my tubs were new, but what I did learn was I didn't need a jetted tub. Never used it. I just like a nice deep tub to soak in from time to time.

Elizabeth, we are seeing many homeowners removing the tubs all together, as they never use them.   I really enjoy a bubble bath a few times a week.

I was sitting here thinking.  I've been to Hawaii several times, and stayed with friends who lived there.  Never once did I find a bathtub in any of their homes.  They all had showers.  I hadn't really thought about that before.  In London, I stayed a place that had a small square tub, about half the size of what we normally have here in the states.  You have to sit in them with your knees under your chin.  Whether you have a tub, or a shower, we are still more fortunate than some who have neither right now.

Nina Hollander I had a jetted tub in our last house and used it a lot but I was also 20 years younger. Probably would not use it today. One of the reasons we removed our backyard spa is because we stopped using it years ago.

Joan Cox Me, too, nothing beats a fragrant tub of steamy water to soak in.
