Bricks, Sunflower & Flower Mound

A Dedication to the Sunflower

The sunflower isn't visible from the street,

nor can you see it when you drive around the cul-de-sac,

rather it salutes you at the rear garage.

Like a well groomed tall soldier,

it stands at attention.

The masonry work of the soldier bricks

supporting the shiners separated by mortar beds

above the lintel surrounded by rows of brick and mortar

doesn't get as much attention

as the sunflower.

Sunflowers don't usually grow this close

to houses, unless relocated by a bird,

squirrels, no doubt, who knows

how it got there

but there she grows!

The sunflower with her bright yellow face

welcomes the day and faces the sun.

Texas heat doesn't bother her.

She welcomes whatever comes her way

any time of day with a brighter

outlook on life than humans

The practice of laying bricks must be cut to fit the space

but the sunflower doesn't need to be in the exact location to grow

nor is it manufactured in a hot brick oven,

it grows in soil and water, exposed by sun

standing vertical, tall and strong

Sunflower, she's the queen with a face

adorned by soft pedals.

Patiently she waits for birds and bees

or her picture to be taken

by someone like me

Patricia I was showing a house abot 20 miles from Lewisburg last year and I remember a garden that was growing the biggest sunflowers.... I would have stopped and taken photos but my clients needed to get back to Lewisburg. I will have to check out the place to see if they have the sunflowers again. They were truly amazing.

Patricia, I am always debating about you missing your mark, you should have been an author? or you should have been a poet? It reminds me of an old client of mine he was into Jazz & Played an awesome Sax..... and he was a fantastic cook made me look like a novice.... and he was an attorney by profession... I used to say to him you should have been this and that.... he told me NO being an attorney allows me to do all this:))Endre

Lisa Von Domek - A FRIENDLY flower! I really like that! They exemplify the meaning of how people should live their lives. Perhaps that's why they grow so tall, to remind us to keep our heads high, stand up straight, be bright, and always make others happy. Give back to your community, and most of all, spread seeds of kindness and joy to all!

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® - It would be worth going back there to take photographs. I remember being in the country last year. I was rushing home to write up a contract but the sun shone on a field of dreamy landscaping. Oh, how I wanted to stop the car and just enjoy all its splendor. The next few days I was too busy working hard on behalf of the buyers but they decided to take a break. And so did I. I drove back around sunset to the location of where I wanted to take photographs. I soon realized I missed my opportunity,  so I drove a little further. Not only did I find a beautiful field, took lots of photographs, but found a location for my buyers too!

Retracing our steps may not get us to the same place, but could get someone else closer to home!

Myrl Jeffcoat - Thank you for the FEATURE!!! You always brighten my day!

When there are sunflowers, "the gods are shining their face on us." That sounds like a line from Greek Mythology and it's so poetic and beautiful! Myrl, you really know how to bring sunshine and happiness to all of us here on ActiveRain and I am so grateful for your presence.

May you always have happiness and joy!

William Feela - People can learn a lot from sunflowers. They always give back and bring good karma. I'm glad to know you love to plant sunflower seeds. They bring so much good to people and all creatures here on earth.

You are wonderful!

George Souto  - I am always amazed the head of the sunflower doesn't topple over to the ground because of its weight. But then it empties its soul to feed the birds and I think to myself, what a wonderful world!
