Wordless Wednesday...We’re Having Babies!

We certainly didn’t expect this! But the other day, Larry went to the garden hose and found our new mother!

peahen and eggs

We know that the peacocks and peahens have been having their spring fling. If you don’t know, during this time of year, they are obnoxiously loud!!! I was on the phone with Sharon Tara once and she could hear them in the background...What’s that awful noise???”

She’s pretty hidden but we’ve been keeping an eye out for peacocks that might get too close to the nest. I understand that they have been known to go after the eggs because they need and want the attention of the mother. They’re not all that different from some humans I’ve read about.

We’re not sure what’s going to happen when the peababies hatch.  Besides worrying about the peacocks, we’re also concerned about iguanas and raccoons. We have the water hose handy because I did speak to someone who said that we could squirt predators with water if they got too close.

Mama does get up on occasion but she hasn’t been up much lately. Larry was able to get the photo of all of the eggs when she was up! An even dozen!!

Pretty cool, you will have to setup shop near the nest with your hose in hand and make sure no predators get the eggs.

The biord must have been on childbirth pills to create that many babies.

Kathy that does not look like a very safe place.  Hopefully the eggs will be around long enough to hatch.

Wow that's a lot of babies! They've certainly got several 'Mammas' looking out for them all. We've got a couple pair of baby hummingbirds and it's so cute to watch them learn how to drink from the water fountain!! They are so SO tiny!

It won't be long now Kathy. They'll all be strutting their stuff around the house in a couple of weeks.

That's a rare scene, Kathy.  It would be wonderful to have peacock visitors, but to see them with a nest is extraordinary.

Sharon Lee Thank you!  It looks like it's out in the open but she's pretty covered. I have no idea how long she'd been on the nest.

Amanda S. Davidson I'm not sure what we're going to do when the eggs hatch. She's not a pet so we keep our distance.

J.R. Schloemer, CRS we are so excited and fearful for her as well.

Gabe Sanders I will. I went out today and she was off of the nest, which is good because she has to eat and drink.

Nina Hollander I have no idea how long she was there but from what I read it takes about 28 days to hatch.

Thanks Sheila Anderson I'm not sure how many nests are in the community but they've been mating. We may have a lot of peababies soon.

Michael Jacobs keep your fingers crossed.

Roy Kelley I have no idea what's going to happen but we'll see!

Joe Pryor that's too funny!!!

George Souto I agree with you but after doing some research, we decided to leave them where they are and let mother nature do her thing. That said, we watch what's going on while when we're at home.

A friend of mine tried "hosing" racoons out of my garden. Seemed like word got out that there was a free "bath house" in the neighborhood and we got more of them. Ha ha.

Morning Kathy.

12 at a time, that is what I call a full house.  I'll bet the soon to be mother will be protective with her babies.

that's going to be a lot of babies!  We're pretty sure it was a raccoon that raided a nest of baby birds on our back deck.  The momma bird had built a next in a folded up tarp on a couple of storage bins.  Unfortunately not high enough to keep away the predators.

What fun, Kathy. It's that time of year. But wow, that's alot of babies for Mom Peacock (peahen) to watch over, and potentially a lot of noise! Looking forward to photos of the young ones.
