Being a first-time home buyer these days can be challenging. Since
it's a seller's market there are not many homes available and competition is stiff for the ones that are. Fortunately there are city, county, state and federal programs out there to help first-time buyers with down payments and closing costs. There are loans and grants available - not just for low income buyers and they are not always exclusive to first-time buyers. Pasco County and Pinellas County have the Home Key First Time Buyer Program and Sarasota County has the Own a Home Opportunity Program. There are also the Florida First and Military Heroes loan programs that offer assistance on home purchases up to $250k. Additionally, the Tampa Bay Community Development Corporation processes down payment assistance offered through the cities of Largo, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg, Florida. In order to be eligible for any of the assistance programs buyers are required to complete an approved federal Housing and Urban Development-approved 8-hour education course, but it is definitely worth the effort.
