Fabulous Friday: Home-Grown Blueberries

By

"Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get blueberries."

I have a very small yard, which works well for my nomadic lifestyle.  I do hire my yardwork done since I travel so much and want to be sure things look nice whether at home or not.  I do love that having a small yard doesn't cost me much for yard care.

In my small yard are two lovely blueberry bushes.  One early bearing and one comes on later.  Both bushes had lots of blooms this Spring and the early variety is now ripening.  I'm not much of a cereal eater but yesterday morning I had a bowl of granola so I could enjoy some fresh home-grown blueberries on top.

It was soooo good!  And, there are plenty more where those came from.

Carol,

I love blueberries, and we have them at least 3 times a week.  We add them to our yogurt, add dry roasted hazelnuts, and a drizzle of honey for breakfast. I also love when Ron makes featherlight pancakes with blueberries...They are SO good.  A

Hi Alexandra,
Featherlight pancakes?  What is his secret recipe?  I am so lucky.  My brother also has a blueberry farm so I get all I want during the off-season, as well.

Carol,

I will take a picture of the recipe and send it to you. later today.  They literally rise before your eyes...There is a farm on the coast north of us where you can pick blueberries.  We rarely go that way unless we are driving to SF.

I love blueberries, Carol. But you still won't catch me growing my own! Although I don't mind picking them.

Hi Carol

What a treat to have those bushes in your yard. There is something special about being able to go out and pick them fresh! And you know how they have been cared for and handled!! I love them in waffles!

Those berries look so good.  I wonder do you get enough to make a cobbler?

Absolutely love blueberries and for years our family went blueberry picking out in blueberry fields in Michigan.  You are so fortunate to have two bushes that survive weather conditions and produce so nicely.  Have a wonderful week, Carol.

Good afternoon Carol. I tend to agree with your premise here. I can't eat fruit but the point is the same with anything.

Hi Nina Hollander ,
I grew up in the berry country of Oregon and I guess it's in my blood.  We earned our spending money for the entire school year by picking strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries in the summer.  My brother actually has a blueberry farm and brings me berries 5# at a time... so I don't really need to grow my own berries.  I just like having a couple bushes.

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS, Broker ,
Why do they taste better when we grow them ourself?   I grew up in the berry country of Oregon and I guess it's in my blood.  We earned our spending money for the entire school year by picking strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries in the summer.  My brother actually has a blueberry farm and brings me berries 5# at a time... so I don't really need to grow my own berries.  I just like having a couple bushes.

Hi Kathy Streib ,
They're expensive in the stores, aren't they?  I grew up in the berry country of Oregon and I guess it's in my blood.  We earned our spending money for the entire school year by picking strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries in the summer.  My brother has a blueberry farm and brings me berries 5# at a time... so I don't really need to grow my own berries.  I just like having a couple bushes for fresh when in season.

Hi Debbie Reynolds ,
Yes, I would have enought for a cobbler but my brother owns a blueberry farm and he brings me berries 5# at a time that I keep in the freezer.  UI use those for my pies / cobblers and blueberry pancakes and syrup.  I love these fresh ones on cereal.

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS ,
Yes, picking my own fresh is the best.  My brother owns a blueberry farm so he keeps me supplied during the the offseason.

Hi Jane,
My brother operates a blueberry farm in Oregon and they allow families to come in and do the U-pick thing.  He keeps me supplied in the offseason! Nothing like fresh, though.

Hi Sheila Anderson ,
Wow... that's a bummer that you can't eat fruit.  I assume that is a medical condition?

Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits also but I don't understand a lot of times when you find them growing out in a bog or vacant land, how they can't be organic Carol...
