Living in Brooklyn has it's perks. First and foremost is the neighborhood feeling that having a "stoop" creates for a resident. Summers are great because the stoop is the "porch" way of living I was brought up with in the West. Languid afternoons, and evenings when the temperature drops just a bit, the neighbors start collecting on their stoops, to sit and talk and watch the world walk by. It is the perfect time to catch up with neighbors and plan for the local block parties, (another amazing thing about Brooklyn living). Where else would the "Toad Cafe" featuring vegan food, Chez Alex, a fresh upstart coffee and bakery, and Sophia and Grace cookie company find themselves successful on the same block---- that's right, BedStuy. The diverse mix of residents provide ample interest in food choices, and neighbors support and populate these new eateries with a passion. I myself have made a weekly visit to the new Sonora Restaurant on Howard Ave a must for their shrimp entrees with a Mexican twist. The bar/restaurant is fast becoming a local favorite and a great pick for savvy restauranteurs.
The window covered in ads and paper, corner deli is going by the wayside. In it's place are fresh, featured spots that create something of value for neighbors to visit and spend their money in. Open seating on sidewalk with a covered picnic table at the new Fresh Market on Ralph and MacDonough is a new comer making a statement for the area. Their quick meals/juice bar and fresh grocery selection is a step up from what has been standard shopping fare in the area.
Ralph Ave is just one block from Patchen, and two from Malcolm X Blvd, both home to numerous trendy zaggat rated restaurants and eateries. Most recently featured in a BedStuy food crawl in May, the event brought hundreds of new customers to the area once they discovered the jewels within it's streets.
