Researching Kitchen Appliances Before Buying

By

When our refrigerator in Sacramento showed signs of losing its digital mind, it wasn't an easy thing to buy another refrigerator. Aside from a ton of options to weigh, width and height considerations, it would be nice, I figured, if the refrigerator lasted more than 9 years. They make them to wear out eventually or break. Not enough new homeowners to sell refrigerators to, I guess, gotta tap the existing market and make them return sooner.

And the competition for refrigerators, for example, is fierce. One top-rated refrigerator that was available quickly in Sacramento was only available at Home Depot, and we refuse to shop there due to Home Depot's political contributions. Since we could not wait, we ended up buying a reputable brand for refrigerators, GE.

But when you are remodeling and replacing all of your appliances, you've generally got a bit more time to purchase any type of new kitchen appliances you want. The entire world opens up. Further, being a Sacramento Realtor forces you to consider future resale value as well. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Tips for Buying New Kitchen Appliances for a Remodel.

Elizabeth we are in the process of replacing a Washer that is less than five years old, so I agree with your post 100% and I am just crossing my fingers that the refrigerator does not give out for at least another year... not for the money just the hassle of replacing it, Endre

Hi Elizabeth... for me, so far so good.... I have top of the line Miele wall ovens and dishwsher, a professional Viking cooktop and GE monogram ridge... so far so good... we are into our 13th years with these with no issues. The only one I had an issue with was my GE Advantium Oven... fortunately, my home warranty replaced that little $3,000 number for $100 for me.

Elizabeth, going through this also, as I want to replace all the appliances.    Think I will mix the brands, as not all the items in one brand have great reviews.

We have an LG refrigerator and dishwasher we love. We need a new cook top and want to repace the double ovens too. We shall see if I stay loyal to one brand. It's so tempting...and I would really love a Viking cooktop, or maybe a Wolf - argh. Now to read the rest of your post....

We got our LG's at Lowes and we did do research before we bought both the refrigerator and the dishwasher. At least we did that part right. :)

Endre Barath, Jr. The problem with replacing the refrigerator after it breaks is you can't wait to order. You need to rely on what's in stock.

Nina Hollander I am spending a lot more on the microwave than the stove. Because really what do I use a stove for anyway besides boiling eggs?

Joan Cox That's what I am doing, too. Mixing the brands. I want the most reliable appliances I can find.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I find if you read the Q&A at Lowe's, you can find considerations you might not even realize you should ponder.

I agree with what you say about the importance of having matching finishes, Elizabeth.  I was in an older home recently, that actually had a Harvest Gold built in oven, a stainless steel refrigerator, and a black glass dish washer.

HI Elizabeth.... I used my cooktop a lot... probably as much as my microwave and my slow cooker. It's my ovens I don't use as much unless I'm entertaining.
