When Classy Wasn't Assy

It Was Just GREAT!!!

I am sad to read the news today

"Laura Ingalls Wilder, the author of the "Little House on the Prairie" series, one of the most popular and delightful series in all of American children's literature, has had her name stripped from a literary award over "racism concerns" about the way the author wrote about black and Native American people."

CLASSIC & TIMELESS

The Daytona International Speedway Follow the link for the Daytona International Speedway Schedule.

I will never forget the sound of the engines at my first Daytona International Speedway event back in the 1970's. It was an Adrenalin rush I never forgot. America was TRULY built on cars and some GREAT ones too!!!

When American Backbone Was Under The Hood

And Performace Meant Excellence

--- Patricia Feager

Excellence meant mechanics with muscles turning wrenches, replacing parts, checking the engine without a Diagnostic Testing Machine, no time for chick flicks, making money the old fashioned way to take a date out to dinner, and polishing up your engine! Three scores or give or take a few more, performance meant excellence.

Hi Patricia Feager, I love the title and thoughts in this post, as always, very well written. Sometimes, I wonder how people define "classy". I must've been sleeping when the definition was changed. It's hard not to think how everything once was..

Patricia,

OMG....we are going nuts with this PC stuff.  Classy like common sense is becoming an antiquated expression...really Laura Ingalls?

Beth Atalay - Thanks, Beth. It's pretty bad when we have to sleep with our eyes wide-open! Dare I say America never had an Iron Curtain, but there is something going on behind curtains that we don't know about.

Hi Patricia,
My husband has two classic Buicks when he passed away.  I kept them for a few years because they looked so classy in my carport and were fun to drive.  Eventuall, though, I sold them to collectors who will love and care for them the way they deserve.

As for Political Correctness, it's gone way beyond way too far.

Carol Williams - I understand. When my husband passed away, I had five classics in need of body work or some type repair, 2 snowmobiles, a trailer, and a boat with a cracked block. I sold them all and bought a  one brand new car. A woman has to do what  woman has to do!

At least your cars look to be more whole than mine were!

Political correctness - if ever there needs to be a law, this is one I'd vote for.

Red is my favorite color, so you know that any one of those cars would be extremely welcome in my garage.  I must say that top picture of the Saleen really is my favorite though.  But, I can imagine the price tag on it is through the roof.

Myrl Jeffcoat - My heart went pitty pat for the Saleen too! To be honest, I was thinking of you when I went to this Classic Auto show in Flower Mound and found one that I thought you might like. But I thought to myself, Myrl would probably prefer a convertible. Let me know what you think! Also, THANK YOU for being featured in the Old Fart's Club. Now that's very, very cool!

Dorie Dillard - I raised my kids to read Laura Ingalls Wilder books and they loved watching Little House on the Prairie. I made picnic lunches during summer vacation and took them to the Forst Preserves in Illinois and we played Little House on the Prairie. And guess what? They turned out to be well adjusted kids, educated, and fun to be around. Plus, as kids my daughter learned to be like Laura and her older sister Mary, doing good for others and my son developed skills by watching Michael Landon. He turned out to be a great father and I'm glad he learned so much from watching the T.V. series.

How dare anyone accuse the author of being a racist! I am sick about it too!

Hi Patricia

These are wonderful photos, and such a thoughtful post. But the news about Laura Ingalls Wilder is certainly disturbing - I’ll have to read more to understand what it’s all about and why

Jeff Dowler, CRS - I was drawn in by the classic automobiles like a kid stepping inside my first candy store! Oddly enough, I couldn't stop thinking about candy apples, adrenaline rush, and good old fashioned fun!

Yes, it's disheartening about Laura Ingalls Wilder. American history should not be erased as if it never existed at all. Learning from our past is part of the culture that has made America great, recognize where we failed, how we changed, or when we needed innovation is the past, the starting point for which people move forward. Other countries, i.e., Japan and China are no different.
