The Future Is Here: A Solution For Affordable Housing Is On Its Way!

We are all aware that the “affordable housing” crisis is affecting many parts of our country.  There is a solution that will soon be put into effect in the homebuilding industry. It is known as 3D printing.

In January of 2014, we wrote a post called, “Science Fiction Becomes Reality."  We focused on the 3D Printer that premiered at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We likened it to Star Trek technology in the 24thCentury known as the replicator, which could produce food, clothing and other sundry items. We also posted a video demonstrating the making of a wrench with a 3D printer.

Four years later, on May 12, 2018, this video premiered on YouTube, and in the media.  It showed an affordable 3D-printedHouse that took less than a day to build for $10,000. The prototype was built in Austin, TX, and was the first to received a permit for occupancy. The company ICON is predicting that the costs can be bought down to $4000, for this 650 square foot home.

The use of 3D printing is being adopted in many industries. With a 3D printer, a dentist can print a perfect crown for his patient in 30 minutes. Automobile manufacturers are printing auto parts. Even the luxury industry is using 3D printing.

“The Future is here.  It’s just not widely distributed, yet”

--William Gibson, Science Fiction Novelist

Your Elevator Statement is a succinct and persuasive summary of your extraordinary promise of value, your unique selling proposition.  In a time-starved world the attention span of your target market is shrinking.  To instantly convey what sets you apart from the crowd you need to be able to answer EACH ONE of these 3 questions in less than 30 seconds.: 1) What Do You Do?; 2)  How Do You Do It?, and;  3) How Are You Different?.  Can you state how you are different and better than your competition in less than 30 seconds?

Watch the video above to see and hear how we do it.

Dorie Dillard this prototype is in Austin.  I wonder if you wouldd get a chance to see it, if it is not oo far from you.  I love that Austin was open to it, and gave it an occupancy permit.  A

3-D printing is fascinating. They'll have to figure out how to deal with the electricity and plumbing, but no doubt someone is already working on that issue.

Morning A.

I'll take one, of course it will need to be slightly larger.  Just imagine what they will come up with in the next 10-20 years.  Hope I'll be around to see some of them

There are a lot of new ideas for construction that will change the way we build in the next 20-30 years. Thanks for sharing.

The Dutch city of Eindhoven is to be the first in the world to have habitable homes made by a 3D printer, in an innovation its backers believe will revolutionise the construction industry.

Here in the "Wine Country" of the NorthBay, the loss of 5200 homes in the Firestorms of October 2017 have brought forth many a unique building format to rebuild our lost homes. This is very promising but a bit premature. However, "off-site" building, metal "erector" set housing all are bringing worthwhile alternatives to "Stick-build" traditional housing. California has approved a statewide "ADU" or accessory dwelling unit zoning which allows every City to promote these units to solve our housing crisis. The off-site building is very promising as the constrution site is not a perpetual building zone. The foundation is poured, all other components are built "off-site" and then assembled on the foundation. One company, "CoreX" has 7.5 acres under roof at the old Mare Island ship building area in Solano County. They are building housing for Google. They erect a steel "grid" on site, build all the apartments off-site, right down to colors, appliances, etc, then ship them to the site and "plug-them-in"! We are seeing some truly thought provoking housing designs. This system would be great for an ADU as the square footage is perfect.

Over the past few years I have seen so much change in the 3D printing ability.

Now we can have a house. There is still some research to be done on its longevity, but progress is being made.

My interest would be how well this material will fit with Green sustainability.

Thanks for the post.

John Wiley this material is made sustainable. Many projects have been built, if you are interested here is alink which includes a mansion in China.  Our country is lagging behind and no doubt thanks to the politicians and their self interests and those who are afraid of the upheaval, because construction as we know it today, will not be the same at all.  A

Mike Kelly,CRS,CIPS Thank you for comment.  Having lived in Napa for 6 and a half years, we were aware of what was happening during the fires, and we were there for an event early in November and saw the damage first hand.  I love that people got mart in rebuilding the homes.  I love that Corex is doing that on Mare Island.

The 3D printer is not all thaat new, America has been slow to get there for obvious reasons.  The Chinese built a mansion in uner 45 days, there are canal in Amsterdam, bridges in Spain etc.  Wishing you a great rest of the week.  A

That is so cool!  Better take a number if all of that becomes a reality! Of course there will be those that need more than 650 sq ft, but the idea should take off lightening fst in areas that are too fast paced for anyone to achieve home ownership.
