How Can We Help With Scamming?

This recent post  opened a whole new meaning on scam. I am receiving calls of how our own industry professionals and our clients are being scammed.

 scam alert

The problem: some of these dishonest, unscrupulous men (so far they have all been male) are preying on women. The ones I am hearing from are in real estate or own property. They are single, recently divorced or widowed.

These men are getting close with them, borrowing money, paying it right back. This gains their trust.

And a little while later they manage to get large sums of money or a hold on their real estate property in various ways. Some have posed as  real estate investers, another wound up married ... her accounts cleaned out and her home lost.

I have helped one client to avoid a scam by giving her some things to look out for.

These are smart (but lonely) women who have been taken…first romantically..then for large financial losses.

The victims are too embarrassed to file a report.  These con artists continue to get away with these crimes, sometimes pitting these women friends against each other. By the time the first one realizes she has been taken, try to warn the others, but it is too late.

These  need to be reported. These are serious crimes and embarrassment should not the deterrent.

Any ideas  how we can help?

As a victim I can assure you I am a very intelligent woman but the scammers that are successful have their game down to a science and are extremely smooth in how they operate!  I have met several woman that are also very intelligent people that were scammed by the same person that scammed me.  We have law enforcement involved hoping to stop him from damaging others but our hopes of ever getting reimbursed are almost zero

Margaret the only thing that I can think of is a lot of getting the word out and educating women that this type of scam is on the rise. I've heard stories of this happening to very intelligent women which means these guys are very, very smooth operators.....but I prefer to call it very very sleezy. I hope women do report the sleez balls. Women must do their absolute best to let go of their embarrasment in attempt to help other women from it happening to them.

It's gross that people can wake up each day knowing they're taking advantage of others.  Where there is money, there will be unscrupulous characters trying to get it.

There are so many scams out there.  All we can do is stay alert and get the word out when we discover a new one.

Margaret- All of these scammers are below the lowest of life. I don't think it's enough to educate via bulletins and such. I think that it would be helpful for groups and informal groups with friends to role play so that everyone can actually see what is being said. Today's scammers catch people off guard so that even the smartest and sharpest person might be fooled.

Terry McCarley Thank you for stepping up and sharing. I have talked to so many victims who were too embarrassed to admit they have had this kind of experience. Your comment is what I was looking for. Would love to see a group formed that could help. Let's talk again soon.

Thank you Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - Until someone becomes a victim they will never understand just how smooth these men operate!  I totally understand why most victims are too embarrassed to admit what happened to them.  Most people are very quick to assume anyone who falls for the scams are stupid but that is not the case at all.  Happy to talk to you anytime!

Hi Margaret,
The sad thing is, scam warnings are everywhere and yet people are being scammed every day because they think it won't happen to them. The scammers are so good and so smooth.  Scamming is a very sore subject with me.  I tried to warn a dear friend who would not listen and, literally, lost everything.  Actually it has happened to two close friends... both very intelligent people.

I can understand why the women would be hesitant to come forward at first - but they must. These creeps need to be stopped. No one should be embarrassed about trusting someone and falling for some pretty tempting bait. Time to shed some light on these rodents. D

Kathy Streib I am so glad you featured this in your weekly post. Again this subject was brought up on the radio show and again I received a call on the show and another afterwards.

The more of us who know about this can educate many others. Your featuring this is a wonderful way to have more people aware and talking. Thanks for the feature and for the text today.

Love your weekly Ah-ha posts.

Scumbags!

How terrible that these creeps are ruining women's lives.

I had a friend once who was almost taken by one of those online Nigerian scam deals. He had her convinced (hours and hours a day on the phone with her) that he was for real. I was able to convince her not to trust him before she lost any money.

These "scumbags" are quite personable, well groomed and as I mentioned...so smooth.

Hi Margaret

It’s appalling that this sort of thing is happening, but scamming just seems to be getting more and more prevalent, and perhaps harder to detect as it becomes more sophisticated. The best thing is getting the word out and hope others listen.

Thanks for putting a focus on scams.

Scams work because they touch a need in certain people.

Scams don't work on all people. But when it touches a need in a person then the defense goes down.

Spreading the word about scams is a beginning.  That said, many are still tricked into believing that a scammer is offering something of value.  I met a woman who sent $5000 on two occasions to a scammer.  The first time, her family and the small town postmaster retireved her check from the mail drop at the post office.  After receiving follow-up calls from the scammers,  she sent a second check and did not tell her friends and relatives.

Jeff Dowler, CRS If each of us could continue to educate and remind others..it would be easier to report and stop. The embarrassment has stopped many from reporting.

John Wiley It definitiely does not work on all people. In fact some are shocked that anyone could fall for these scams. As you said...

When it touches a need...the defenses go down.
