In the spring of 1775, after more than a decade of turmoil against English policies and the first battles of the War of Independence, the 13 American colonies sent representatives to the first Continental Congress held in Philadelphia. After much debate about cutting ties with Britain, the representatives voted unanimously for independence on July 2, 1776.

The next day, in a letter to his wife, the representative of Massachusetts, John Adams, said that the date "should be solemn with pomp and parades, with demonstrations, games, sports, rifles, bells, bonfires and illuminations of one another. border of this continent from now on and forever and ever. "

On July 2, 1776, the representatives of the different areas of North America signed a declaration of independence that would be sent two days later, on July 4, 1776, to the entire country.

Thus, two days after his important vote, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence and sent copies to the entire country. The declaration was dated July 4, which the new nation adopted as Independence Day. Adams was right about how the American people would celebrate it. Even as the new country struggled to make independence a reality, on July 4 it was quickly characterized by parades, concerts, meals and fireworks.

The great "truths" according to the Declaration of Independence are: "that all men are equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness, that to guarantee these rights are instituted among men, governments, deriving their legitimate powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever a form of government becomes destructive of these principles, the people have the right to reform or abolish it and institute a new government that it is based on these principles, and to organize its powers in the way that, in its judgment, will offer the best chances of achieving its security and happiness ".

Thomas Jefferson, the editor of the Declaration of Independence

Thomas Jefferson painted by Charles Willson Peale. Jefferson wrote the first draft of the declaration in just 17 days. This text would undergo some modifications, but it would maintain, in general lines, the words of Thomas.
