DARN I heard what you just said

To even start this journey, I had to understand exactly what niche meant to me. Obviously, the definition was a place to start and with all words it had several choices depending on how you use it.  The two for using niche as a noun:

  1. a shallow recess
  2. a comfortable or suitable position in life or employment

No brainer what this contest was looking for. Now knowing where I should begin there was just one important thing to decide, where to end.

I have chosen to learn to listen as my niche. Yes, you asked for something different but no matter where I go or what I do, the gift of hearing what someone else is saying to you is truly all that matters.

Way too often, I have words on the tip of my tongue ready to be blurted only waiting for the person I am having a conversation with to stop their banter. My only hearing is the waiting for them to stop talking. And often, I don't wait till they are done, interrupting them only to have to stop and say something lame such as, sorry thought you were done.

You asked for another type of niche but this is the cornerstone of all that is important to my real estate business. To truly hear what the person you are talking to is saying, to reflect on it for a second and then respond appropriately, a niche I am still seeking and essential to find.

So from this my new day one, my new beginning of the rest of my life, my only goal, the perfection of my niche, listen and hear what is being said. Listen and understand the soul of those in front of you who take the time and care to talk to you. Listen and maybe, just maybe will I not only hear them but will also hear myself, maybe even hear the angels sing.

Till I do so, I will sit here quietly in the Rain and examine my fragile ego, letting it down softly. For it needs to rest and becomes gentle in its old age. Yes, teaching an old dog new tricks is not for the faint of heart but this contest is surely a step in the right direction. Sorry, what is that you just said. I am listening, you will just need to speak up.

Curtis Van Carter - You are brilliant! You listened to the instructions, got clarity about the meaning behind niche, and created what I perceive is the best entry so far!

From my perspective, you're already a winner regardless of the outcome for this contest!

LOVE this post, Curtis! I have to say that if starting over for MOST agents would require learning and MASTERING the art of listening, the world would be a better place.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts - you're spot-on, Curtis!

I know when someone I am talking to is really listening - it shows in their eyes. They are looking at you and really absorbing what you're saying. I have also been trying to be more attentive - as soon as the mind wanders, all connection is lost.

Great post and a niche that will serve you well.

BROVO Curtis Van Carter - I am doing my happy dance that the Feature Fairies caught this great post. I am a good listener.  Could I be even better?  Heck Yes!

What I need more of is patience in listening to the non-stop chatter. I absolutely will interrupt those folks. I feel it is my job to bring them back to the conversation.

Excellent thoughts Curtis, too many in the business world do not listen correctly.  You also have to hear the voids... What they don't say matter as well.  Husband and wife clients: who is calling the shots??  You think one is but it turns out the other is really the decision maker.  Lots of implications...

This is what happens when we listen to respond rather than listen to understand.  It is difficult to master, but your relationships will be so much better if you focus on improving!  Thank you for sharing.

Hi Curtis

What a creative approach to the contest but more importantly you've raised such an essential issue that we all grapple with, some of us more than others! I appreciate the reminder to keep working on listening to truly hear what people are saying. And it's not just clients in our business!

Jeff

You took the niche in a completely different direction and how unique and creative. If we truly LISTEN to what others say, and really hear them, we can go far!
