When Agents Say Gimme Gimme and I Might Not Wanna

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

Don't you just love it when you are judged by the company you keep? Years back, one of my team members told me shortly after she became licensed that she felt embarrassed to be working in the profession, by the way some potential clients treated her. As though she was inconsequentional or replacecable. Agents don't always get respect from the public.

Real estate is a rough, competitive business. But it doesn't mean you can't stand out or you can't make a difference. We make a difference every single month with our closings when we help our clients realize dreams and goals. Does that mean we will take any abuse dished out by some of the unstable people we run across?

This means we take the time to make sure we want to work with our clients before taking them on. Sometimes that means canceling DocuSign documents and never entering further into the relationship to start with. Meaning not every agent wants every listing, and it's wrong to assume that because we are at a house inspecting it and discussing listing that we want to work with that seller. We might not.

It's a two-way street.

Good Morning Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents

Very good points made. We should never feel as if we have to enter into relationships just to earn a commission. There's more to it.

Good Morning, Elizabeth! I completely agree - we don't always take listings for various reasons - and that's okay. No amount of money is worth working with some and can sense that, typically, right out of the gate. We need to listen to our guts more often!

Hope you have a delightful week!

Hi Elizabeth... love that picture! Since practically my first year in the business I've said that one reason I decided to do this instead of going back to the corporate world is because I could pick and choose my own clients and whom I dealt with day in and day out. In the corporate world, no matter how senior you are in the organization (and I was very, very senior), you still had to go along and get along. I give respect to my clients and expect the same from them. Of course, often, you get what you demand. Too many agents put up with anything just to earn a commission.

Hi Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents, I completely agree with you. I've made the mistake of taking a few clients and they were all fired within the first week or two. I'm not going to take a listing just to fill up my inventory, not worth the headache.

Hi Elizabeth- this is a lesson that too often those new to the profession don't learn until later...after they've banged their head on a brick wall and wished they'd never taken a particular client. Walking away has a way of empowering us.

Debe Maxwell, CRS I try to listen to my gut instincts constantly. Generally, those instincts are right. I don't know why it takes some people 40 years or more to learn that.

Nina Hollander So that's where I went south in the corporate world. I did not play along to get along. Nope, I said things like: If you don't like it, you can fire me.

Beth Atalay I recently dodged a horrible experience involving a potential seller who wanted to call all of the shots, showed zero respect for my experience, and then became very agitated because I stated I could smell cigarette smoke in his house. Also sensed domestic abuse in that family and felt for his wife.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents  Hi Elizabeth... I could play that corporate game with the best of them. But once I retired from it, I found I had no interest in doing it again.

Elizabeth, I have turned down a few listings in my time because I could tell the Seller was not serious and I spend a lot of money marketing at the beginning of the listing hence I did not want to waste my money and wished them all the best and if they are interested to come back to me after the listing expires...Endre
