How Do You Blog?

Blogging is such a personal thing. Where you blog, the time of day you blog, how often you blog, what you blog about, and why you blog.blog

My blogging method has morphed over the years that I’ve been at ActiveRain. When I began, I barely knew what a blog was or what it meant to “blog.”

Thanks to the free webinars that Bob Stewart held and the tutorials from Brad Andersohn,  I learned what to do.

So how do YOU blog?

It might help others getting started or those who may have run into a bump in the blogging road to know how others blog.

For example, the hardest part for me is picking a topic. What has helped is having two topics I write about weekly on Saturday and Sunday so there’s no fretting over what topic to choose.

Agents have monthly marketing reports and listings so that covers a lot of blogging days. But there are still many days to cover, which brings me to another point.

Do you post every day, once a week, when the mood fits? I was a very slow starter and thought I was doing well to post 3 or 4 times a month. But after one of those 30 in 30 Challenges (post every day for a month) I made it a personal challenge to post every day. It’s something I’ve chosen to do...not for the points but for me and to keep my dendrites working.

Some write their post the morning or the day that they plan to post. Others will write a week’s worth and schedule them ahead of time.

my blogI write my post the day before and set it to post first thing in the morning.

That said, it doesn’t hurt to publish or reblog in the evening as well to give your post exposure to an audience who logs onto ActiveRain later in the day (if that’s what you want.) Conversely, you might try posting earlier if you tend to post later (west coast time.)

Some members roll out all of their posts at one time. You may have seen them on the blogroll...anywhere from 5 to 10 posts all at the same time. Most of these are listings although, since I don’t stop to read them, I have no clue. However, if you’re wanting more interaction here, I wouldn’t recommend that method.

What do you post about?

It’s all up to you and your goals in writing your blog. For me, I try to write about topics that I hope others will find interesting. They aren’t just limited to staging (how boring would that be) but include local events and anything else on my mind.

Some post only for business...market reports, listings, community reports...and that’s perfectly fine. It makes the phone ring and the business soar!

However you choose to blog, remember that it is YOUR blog. You figure out your goals, the whys, and the whens.

One more thing...write in your own voice!  It makes it a lot easier for you and we have the fun of getting to know who you are through your post!

I blog every day regardless of what is happening. Even if I am somewhere where I cannot blog, like maybe Cuba, I set blogs to drip. But I still blog every day. My favorite time to blog on Active Rain is early in the morning, before my brain has a chance to become corrupted by the day or pulled in some other direction.

Every day (unless inundated by work or on vacation) is a great choice for me Kathy. I enjoy getting to know people through their words and appreciate a little free-style over stats and market reports! Though they are very important and make the phone ring when done. FUN post, thank you!

"Write in your own voice" is every author's best advice but it's a really hard concept to explain to someone who is just starting out. The good news is, in time, you'll naturally grow and develop into it and then you'll wonder why it ever seemed confusing or foreign when all it is now is comfortable and true.

As you know, I used to blog consistently and prolifically, but somewhere along the way I stopped and lost my blogging mojo. I guess I do write quite a bit on Facebook. I intend to start blogging somewhat consistently here again starting...now. Nothing crazy, but at least enough to start re-connecting with my friends.  :)

Hi Jason, yes I see you all over social media. You were a stand up blogger for years on the Rain that I followed, good to see you.

Thanks for sharing, Kathy Streib. Excellent points about blogging techniques. I'm still looking for the inspirations and this may help.

I choose a topic, sit down, write, post.  Almost never do I stash one for future posting.  And rarely do I now post more than once a day.  Much has changed since the beginning both in frequency (it was MORE then) and choice of topics (more about getting comments and less about getting business).  Now, my focus is on the phone ringing.  And it was Karen Bernetti's 30/30 challenge that got me to consistently blog.  Now it's almost 8 years later, tick tock, time to blog.  Can't go to sleep until it is done :)

Morning Kathy.

My favorite subject has always been history.  Hence, when I was searching for the perfect subject there was no question on what to write about.  I write every day, 365 for the past three-four years.

Great guidelines here.  My blogging has evolved for sure, too.  I do not have a shortage of topics...(in fact, I think I have about 150 topics to write about)...I have a shortage of time.  Everything takes longer than I think it will. I decided to push myself this month and try to do 2 a week (rather than 1).  Well, I'm already behind...just published my 1st article for last week on Monday.  I better get moving.

We blog whenever anything happens with one of our listings - under contract, attorney review, closed, whatever. We also try to do monthly market reports for each of the towns we work in. Finally, we always have a blogging series running. Dear TZ was a series of advice for buyers/sellers that we ran a few years ago. We ran a series on downsizing last year. We've just started a series on decluttering.

But, like most of us, we have to make the time to do this. It's low on the priority list when there are always fires to put out.

In a perfect world, I plan out my blogging calendar at the beginning of every month. Since I write for 3 different sites, it's a chore to be sure - but having a framework of topics and where/when they will be posted is certainly helpful to keep me on track.

I write them in my head and by the time I get a free minute to sit down and actually write them, the idea has faded from my memory. I had a really good topic I was going to write about this week but now, for the life of me, can't remember it!! Too darn busy.
