Word Full Wednesday: A Noble Symmetrical Flower To Keep You Smiling!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants

It was time again to buy new orchids for our home.  Of course, we drove to Westerlay Orchids Greenhouse in Carpinteria, for the best selection.  So many colors to choose from.

We both love them because they last at least 3 months.  They are easy to care for (2 ice cubes a week per orchid), like a well lit spot (not direct sunlight) and they keep us smiling every time we gaze at them.

"We humans think we are smart, but an orchid, for example, knows how to produce noble, symmetrical flowers, and a snail knows how to make a beautiful, well-proportioned shell. Compared with their knowledge, ours is not worth much at all.

We should bow deeply before the orchid and the snail and join our palms reverently before the monarch butterfly and the magnolia tree. The feeling of respect for all species will help us recognize the noblest nature in ourselves."

-  Thich Nhat Hanh

Orchids are so exotic! I think they are one of the most unusual plants in the world and I can't help but believe, they are much like snowflakes, no two are exactly alike.

I hope you enjoy the new orchids you purchased today!

Westerly orchids - such a lovely touch in your home - and I love the quote. Nature is humbling - and we can learn a lot from the natural world. Regardless of what we may think, we all have a lot to learn.

Marco Giancola I have a dear friend that get his phaleas to bloom again.  He has a room in his house that is akin to a greenhouse.  Our friends in Florida have orchids outside thriving as does the public areas in their club.  One of the species  that you have just does not do well here as we do no have the huumidity to sustain it...although today it is at 85%.  I have lots of cymbidiums outside and they thrive!

Nina Hollander It depends on the size of the pot whether it is three or two ice cubes.  I usually buy little ones as part of the arrangement and they only need one.  I have noticed that the white orchids last the longest as well as the pale, yellow green ones in our office have been here since late January...They like our work.  A

James Dray sorry to hear your flowers are wilting.  Sometimes they just give up. We have had unusual hot and humid weather here, and I have had to water twice this week.  We can't wait for things to go back to normal A,

Alexandra, my grandmother loved Orchids and I tried having a couple in the house to remind me of her but, didn't do very well with them. I am going to try again with your ice cube tip. Thank you for sharing that! They're so beautiful, I love the colors.

Ron and Alexandra- I was checking on my outdoor orchids this afternoon!  I've told myself no new outdoor orchids until after hurricane season. It's a chore bringing them in for a hurricane.

Alexandra we had a couple in our back yard under the sun shade. We could not keep them for the life of us. We do not keep live plants indoors from being overly cautious with our animals .... not wanting them to get poisoned...Endre

I love orchids and was in HomeDepot a couple days ago where I saw a huge counter of orchids.  I so wanted to pick up a few, however I absolutely do not have a green thumb.  Today I read your post and yup, I can follow your instructions:  2 ice cubes per orchid per week and a well-lit (not too hot) spot.  Thank you,  Ron and Alexandra Seigel.  Have a great day!  I will let you know how I do........

Hannah Williams When Quincy was a baby, he would run to the kitchen when he heard the ice cubes coming out.  We would put one of the floor and he would bat it around...He loved it.

Endre Barath, Jr. the only ones that do well outside in our climate are the cymbidiums.  We have had cats all our married life and not one of them has ever shown an interest in a phaleanopsis, let alone a cymbidium.  Here is a link to the article re cat on phaleanopsis.  Hope this helps.  A
