What is Surban?
Combine the words urban (relating to, characteristic of a city) and suburb (an outlying district of a city, especially a residential one.) Suddenly a new real estate concept is discovered, identified and labeled.
Chris Porter, on the podcast - New Home Insights, discussed the combining of terms to identify a new real estate reality in the episode 4: Let's Talk Surban.
As lifestyle choices change Surban living is an emerging real estate trend appealing to first time buyers not ready to fully embrace the suburban lifestyle, and at the other end of the spectrum, equity loaded move-down buyers or empty nesters, not willing to leave their communities but no longer desiring or needing the family home.
Each demographic shares the same desire for a home in a community with the characteristics of city life while simultaneously offering the charms and quaintness of small town living.
Urban living, or city living, traditionally offers proximity to dining, shopping and entertainment all within specific geographical boundaries, usually walkable areas.
Suburban living is often defined by good school districts, homes with larger yards and more square footage. It's the suburbs but usually located a distance from the big city and the myriad of pleasures held within.
Surban communities offer a combination of each. Irvine and Anaheim California are examples of these cities appealing to this buyer. Love this quote describing this trend "can I get a tattoo and antiques."
