Memorial day is a very very important day around Augusta!
With Ft Gordon on our back door, we are deeply rooted with both active military members and the veterans, both are integral threads in the fabric of our community. We have about 70,000 veterans in Augusta and surrounding areas!! My husband being one of the brave veterans living here!
Fort Gordon is a 56,000 acre Army post and home to the USArmy Signal Corps. It is the largest Communications logistic facility in the world.
About 9000 Civilians and over 16,000 military from all branches of service work there. Ft Gordon was first opened in 1941 and has operated without closure ever since.
Ft Gordon is also home one of the largest military medical facilities in the country, including one of three major field medical training facilities in the USA. The commander of General Eisenhower Medical Center also serves as Cheif of the Army Medical Corp which includes Medical, Dental and Veternary commands over the SE US and Puerto Rico.
Within the past year, two very significant and large facilities have opened on Ft Gordon. The NSA (National Secutity Administration) opened the Georgia Regional Security Center --so top secret NObody really knows! (ha!) And the new Battle Command Lab which researches civilian technology and its applications for battle use.
So, as you can see, it is very important for our economy (and other reasons of course) that we do not forget our Warriors, fallen or not!
Of course it gives us a GREAT excuse to party and go to THE LAKE! Oh, did I mention that Strom Thurmond Lake or "Clark Hill Lake" as the locals prefer to call it, is also only a hop skip and a jump away?......another topic for tomorrow!
Cheers!!
Maria
