I confess to being an ice cream snob, and am always seeking out handcrafted ice cream. When I read that Sweet Science Ice Cream was opening a real brick-and-mortar storefront this summer at Keg and Case Market at 928 W Seventh Street in St. Paul we made a special trip to check it out last weekend. Unfortunately, I missed the small print that said ‘COMING SOON’… it isn’t open yet. But by the time we got there I had to have some Sweet Science ice cream, so we headed to their window shop at Como Lakeside Pavilion, 1360 Lexington Pkwy N. It was worth the trip!
My cone was a split scoop with ‘Cayenne Caramel Brownie’ and ‘Rhubarb Cinnamon Almond’. Both flavors were so fabulous I didn’t even complain when I made a mess with ice cream dripping all over me… I didn’t want to eat it too fast so I could savor every lick!
What I always look for in my ice cream is simple flavors based on pure, natural ingredients. Ashlee Olds, the creator of Sweet Science Ice Cream, describes her ice cream below… yum!!!
My ice cream has no high-fructose corn syrup, no emulsifiers, stabilizers, none of that. I use whole foods — when available, organic — whole sugar and whole cream. The flavors are simple but elegant. There’s no Chunky Monkey or candy bar flavors; it’s more about what ingredients accentuate and play off each other and balance each other.
For me ice cream isn’t just for summer, I like great ice cream year round… so I still look forward to their shop on W Seventh Street. But this location at Como Park Lakeside Pavilion has its summer advantages… peaceful lake with paddle boat, canoe and kayak rentals… and entertainment throughout the summer, such as the Rosetown Players performing the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, ‘State Fair’ this week, July 12-15, 2018….
