Landfills Are Full - Is the Internet Full of Trash?

By

Just about every city and state has landfill issues and rules about recycling. Why aren't there rules on the Internet to get rid of old or erroneous information floating around in Cyberspace? Also, if it isn't factual, why are people allowed to express freedom of speech on the Internet without any credibility or proof?

BROWSING HISTORY

Take responsibility for emptying trash on the Internet and clean up computers before they crash and get hacked. Regardless of educational level, don't be naive to believe everything you read when information is found on the Internet.

"The Library is the temple of learning,

and learning has liberated more people than wars in history."

--- Carl T. Rowan

INSTANT INFORMATION

The concept of getting instant information is wonderful! However, how much information is trash? Have a Security System and back-up in place. Also, why is it that when you search for information, you find junk that you weren't looking for in the first place; yet seems interesting - so click and read further?

WEIRD RULES

This morning I was looking up information when I got "Weird Rules To Keep in Mind When Traveling Through Blue Ridge, GA." Out of curiosity, I read some weird stuff; then immediately following without my initiative was "16 Weird Rules to Keep in Mind When Traveling Though Texas." There are eyes (algorithms) in Cyberspace! Some of the most ridiculous stuff listed included the following:

  • Outlawing the Encyclopedia Britannica
  • Watch your Bean Intake in Port Arthur, TX (no obnoxious odors inside an elevator)
  • Special $5 permit to walk barefoot

I'm no lawyer, and I don't practice law, but this trash was out there, not only for TX but all states in the United States. When I searched Google - TX Laws Statutes, I couldn't find anything related to what was printed on "Weird TX Laws;" yet, I have to wonder why does this junk have to stay stuck in Cyberspace polluting the minds of individuals, especially young children, and why are so many schools requiring children and students to make use of the Internet?

CREDIBLE RESOURCES

How credible does credible have to be and why are actors allowed to advertise pills, medicine, medical procedures, mortgage and real estate information without credentials or a license to do so? You'll never find me being nominated for "The Oscars," Best Actress," or Academy Awards."

As a licensee for Texas Real Estate, I'm only qualified to know what is required by the State of Texas to sell residential real estate. Public trust is important. I do not practice law. I am not an actor or actress. I am a traveler of knowledge and enjoy visiting libraries everywhere I travel.

BEWARE OF TRASH

Read and disseminate information responsibly. Never plagiarize. Give credit where credit is due. When traveling on the INTERNET, be cognizant of qualifications. Don't fall victim into somebodies trash that shouldn't have been there in the first place and hasn't be recycled, or eliminated. If you're really thirsty for knowledge, go to the library research database, use the card catalogs, or take a class on Library Research. It's fun and educational without being weird!

Hi Patricia

The Internet is an amazing place, in good ways and bad. This was certainly a thoughtful read with some really good suggestions!

Enjoy your Sunday!

HI Patricia Feager - It is rare that I post anything with out research to back it up.

Just heard this morning that Twitter has eliminated millions of bogus or fake accounts. Numerous outlets reported this. I also heard the stock dropped 10%. Personally, I think it will only help them in the future.

Patricia with information constantly changing I always look at the date something was posted to help determine if it may be out of date and not valid anymore.

Oh, I am SO with you on giving credit when credit is due, Patricia...and the cleaning too, of course! That last paragraph just grabbed me! LOL

It's mind-boggling the things that people steal from us online. I believe in Karma though and try to let it go when I see it...unless of course, they take my entire website (which I have had happen)!

Now, back to the point of your post - this AI thing is a bit scary to me - very 'Big Brother'ish' but, I feel like in our profession, it's impossible to avoid. As you said, making sure you stay as secure as you can is the best thing you can do for protection from hackers.

Hope you have a great week ahead!

Patricia, the internet is full of good, bad, and even ugly. It's a full-time job making sure our personal info is secure on top of the business info. Paul and I talk about what it would be like if the internet was never released to the public. The world would be a very different place - good and bad. I enjoyed your post, got my brain moving this morning. Thank you!

Amanda S. Davidson - It sure is a full time job to stay on top of security on the computer and making sure things are current. There is a lot that goes on in the undercurrent that many people would dive for.

Thanks for your comment and I wish you a great day!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I read Amanda's comment before yours and I'll say it again, there is a lot that goes on in the undercurrent that many people would dive for.

You can't imagine how I nearly died when I saw one of my photos of my own daughter, taken with my camera, on vacation with her posted by someone else. It made me SICK! And worst of all, I tried to reach that person and couldn't. The only place I posted it was on AR. To be honest, I didn't have that problem when the public could contact us. I don't like sneaky people and I know you don't either.

I'm glad this one resonated with you. I was filled with passion on this subject when I wrote this AR post. I'm glad a handful saw it and provided some wonderful comments which I greatly appreciate.

It's really hot here today, and each day is going to be hotter but I'm having make due as best as possible. I hope the best for you always!

George Souto - That's good advice to check the date and see if the information is current. There are times when you need to dig deep and get more but staying current usually brings it all together in a way that is most meaningful and valuable.

All the best to you!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - If there's one thing I've learned on ActiveRain is that you are credible and trustworthy.

I didn't hear the news about Twitter; unfortunately, not surprised. There's no license to use Twitter, FaceBook, or any Social Media. We have nothing to go on but when there is a shadow of a doubt, I don't participate, and I delete frequently. It's sad that this is the way it is. We all have to be very careful and I'm glad I don't have little children. It's a crazy world and can be just as good as scary.

Thank you for being the special person you are.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - the only person I have control over is myself. What I don't have control over is other people and knowing there are dishonest people out there makes me skeptical, especially when I see and read things that I've read before or simply not true.

I recall Day 1 as a student working on my Paralegal Degree. The Attorney said, never believe everything you read on the Internet. Even State Statutes change. Staying current is the best way to serve clients. For assignments, I spent hours at the Law Library. Separating fact from fiction is not easy but when done correctly it is worthwhile.

I am sad that fake news is epidemic. It has gone viral and out of control. Again, nothing I can control, other than what is in my control.

Jeff Dowler, CRS - Putting out a thoughtful post, causing one to think about the subject matter and allowing others to decide what's best for them is something I strive to do without being offensive.

By the same token, your comments are always very thoughtful and wise.

There are many fake accounts out there on Facebook, too. And followers on Instagram from people I've never met and who knows if they are real? The genie is out of the botle, I'm afraid. We just have to proceed cautiously and always check the resources before sharing any "fake news".
