Young people who are at the beginning stage of their career in real estate have a great jump start with technology.  The younger the person, the more inclined they are to have a vast knowledge and much better understanding of the latest and greatest in technology. Every new offering is another challenge for the older agents, and I am making an honest effort to keep up with basic technology changes!! The emphasis is on “basic.”

The key to surviving for the younger, green, and older seasoned agents today, is who you know rather than what you know.  Your sphere of influence is the most important factor, and if that sphere is “connected properly” you’ll survive no matter what you know or don’t know.  My definition of “connected properly” could be a contact in banking; in the construction industry; or in the courts, just to name a few.  If you’re fairly intelligent, you’ll soar.  No one will be capable of competing with you. 

Think about your sphere of influence and “their” spheres of influence. Develop a network from those contacts.  Remember, it’s not what you know, but who you know that is most powerful throughout your entire real estate career, from getting off the blocks to continuing the climb to the top.

Reach out to those with whom you attended college or those with whom you worked in past jobs. Some have gone on to bigger and better positions in other companies, and you never know how they could be of benefit to you.

You might be of benefit to them also.  It works both ways. We’re in a people business, and I assure you, there’s business out there, if you dig deeply enough.  Broaden your horizons; shake the fruit from those old trees; and use your strength of years in the business to close more business.

I tell people there are two ways to make it in this business. Either know a lot of people or create a huge Internet presence. I belong to no organizations, do not mingle, rarely go out, and I like to tell people I knew nobody when I came to Sacramento 16 years ago and I still have no friends, LOL. No one I "hang" with.

No sphere of influence.

I made it in real estate based on knowledge, skill and being able to read and direct people. Not because of anybody I know. But I am a rare turkey.

that's rare.... 


I know alot of people.... three top dogs fed me for a few years.... then I tied in with the right builder and he fed me other builders... I'm a fed agent...but I knew my stuff inside and out.... I knew as much about methods and materials in building a home as any builder I dealt with at that time.... had my builders license too...and unrestricted...I was licensed for commercial construction as well as residential...

thanks, Debbie Reynolds and therein is where you'll find the major future challenge in our business....technology is taking over.... how many times do we see a question in the Q & A section asking for an opinion on a number of lead providing sites... no people are involved....it's just a money drain.

of course, it's to everyone's advantage "to know the business" .... but a PhD in real estate without any people referrals means a lean winter!!!

Fred Dorsey  every successful real estate agent must network and "dig deeply" beyone the first layer.... that top layer does not tell the whole story.... people who know people also know "the right" people....

Often; it's not what you know but rather WHO you know. Family, Friends, friends of Friends, etc. The younger generation may have a few points going their way in regards to technology..
