My Good Boy, My Grandson

New Page 7 Two weeks after we came to the US from the Soviet Union, my daughter learned that she was pregnant. She brought this news to our hotel room without an AC in 104 F July heat of summer 1991. No money, no food, no English (except for me), no idea what to do and what is ahead. NYANA (New York Association for New Americans) asked her what she wanted to do, and told her that they could help with abortion if she chooses to go that route.

Recently Daniel celebrated his 16th birthday.

He is a good kid, good student. He is a member of the school swimming team, plays in the local Playhouse, plays piano, loves to cook, takes care of his little brother, two dogs, a snake and two mice. Helps his busy parents... Normal kid. As he likes to say, he is doing everything near perfect.

Below I recorded him playing at his birthday party. Very raw, he was extremely busy with his school and the theater, and he did not practice at all for a few weeks.

This Memorial Day weekend turned windy and the Ocean was rough. A lot of rip currents were a problem. He went to the beach with his friends, said he saw the lifeguards pulling people out of the rip currents 6 times. He is a good swimmer, and knows what to do if you get caught. He noticed a kid in the water, who was overwhelmed by the current and started drowning. Daniel rushed to him and got him safely out of the water. He called his mom and told her about it.

This time I agree that he was perfect. And I am OK with him being "near perfect" the rest of the time. I love him and I am proud of him. This is my a bit delayed "Happy birthday" to Daniel.

Jon,

Pat the boy on his back, he's one to be proud of. It's so nice when kids and grand kids reflect their elders.

Our daughter left her law pratice for a week and is here in Las Vegas with us and her brother.

Bill - he sure is. I once was in the water with my wife's friend. She got caught in the rip current, so I rushed to her, and I got to her, she grabbed me and started choking. Long story short, the lifeguards got us out of the water. I am not sure we would have made it out without them.

Enjoy your time with the family.

Hi, Jon - Isn't it amazing how fast they grow?  I can remember when our kids were little and now they have kids of their own.  Daniel sounds like a great young man and I'm sure you're very, very proud of him!

Jesse - you are so right. Time flies. And when I was 16, I did not have the saved life behind my belt.

Well, as long as we enjoy having them around, we are blessed.

Jon - This is a terrific tribute to your grandson.  I am going to include this one in the weekly Family Ties recap post today.  He sounds like a great kid, and he is quite the pianist, too!

Jason, Do you think there is anything more flattering than that? Wait till you become a granddaddy. This is so much more than your admiration for your own kids. There is a very good saying that our grandchildren is our revenge to our kids for all they did to us. Though generally often true, not in this case. He is not an angel, but, between us, I remember my 16, and what a moron I was then, so then, yes, he is an angel (he does not need to know that about me). Thank you again,

You're right he's perfect.  I can't imagine being 16 and having the composure to go in and save someone at risk.  What a talented young man.  (You taught him well;-)

Thank you, Susan. Oh, and you play piano? Nice. I envy you, people. My wife plays, but she would nto even try to play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, and he does. Not perfect, of course... Only near.

Matt -  Yes, you can't beat that. I would have been proud, and rightfully so. I did once got a 16 y.o girl out of the water, but I was 35 at that time.

Did I say that he is in is school swimming team, so he is good? What I liked is that he did not calculate, he just acted and acted swiftly...
