Charlotte's 2018 Homegrown Tomato Festival: July 28th

If you love tomatoes, be sure to make time for Charlotte's Homegrown Tomato Festival this Saturday, July 28th! The Festival takes place from 1:00 pm till 5:00 pm at the NODA Brewing Company. The Homegrown Tomato Festival, a very popular annual event here in Charlotte, doesn't just tickle your taste buds, but also supports a great cause: 100 Gardens, a Charlotte-based 501c3 that teaches agriculture and aquaponics in local schools

The event is being MC'd by my friend, Ray Terry (who remodeled my kitchen for me 20 years ago in the first home we owned in Charlotte). Ray is the host of About Your House on WFNZ 601 AM and 102.5 FM. The tomato themed event lets tomato lovers taste dozens of varieties of backyard tomotoes, buy locally grown tomatoes, crown the region’s best tomato grower,  enjoy live music, vendors, and more. Community historian and Charlotte Observer columnist, Tom Hanchett, will be present to provide tales of the origin of the tomato, while Dalton Espaillat of Sabor Latin Street Grill and Dan Huntley will be cooking tomato dishes on-site.

Tickets are $5-10 each. You can buy Homegrown Tomato Festival tickets on-line or purchase them at the door.

Click here for directions to Charlotte's Homegrown Tomato Festival at the NODA Brewing Company.

Okay, so I've never heard of one of these before, but it must be successful if there are "tomato snadwich events" during the year...Eat Healthy.

Nina, YUM, what a great sounding event, and a great way to get lots of fresh tomatoes for sauce or salsa.

Good afternoon Nina - I love fresh red local tomatoes.  I am going to get some in season Jersey tomatoes when I return to New York.

Grant Schneider hi Grant... I have to admit, I've never quite gotten the whole tomato thing (except for cooking)! But it's a big thing here in the south.

This is tomato season and mine are coming in non-stop. I am giving them away, eating them, cooking with them and freezing them. Delicious.

Nina- I love tomatoes and can remember the first home grown vine ripened tomato I ate. It was amazing.  I love to chop tomatoes, and add salt and chopped cilantro.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... I'm always amazed how many people love tomatoes "raw" as I call them. I only cook with them. Never developed a taste for uncooked.

Nina, This is the best time of year for homegrown tomatoes.  Sounds like the place to go for tomato lovers.  We enjoy making tomato sandwiches with Jersey grown tomatoes, thick slices, with some mayo and cheese! A summer time treat/taste that never gets old!

Enjoy!

Gloria Todor hi Gloria... Jersey tomatoes are certainly well known... I think my problem with tomato sandwiches is that I don't eat bread, mayo, or cheese!

Yes that would be a big problem if you do not eat most of these ingredients.  We only enjoy this treat during a short window in the summer, and usually a lunch on the run.  I hope your abstinence is by choice and not something forced upon you.

Sounds great Nina.

I grew up eating the freshest produce from villages nearby.

Tomatoes were my favorite.  Nothing like a freshly picked organic tomato.

There was a specialty dish: peel the skin off of about 15 large tomatoes.

Mash em into a shallow pan.  Add a bit of olive oil, oregano and a few dashes of lemon juice.

Dip and eat with freshly baked bread.    uh huh...
