Maryland Senior Call Check Pilot Program

Senior Residents Encouraged to Sign Up for Maryland’s Senior Call Check Pilot Program

This notice was provided by Joseph Corona, Community Outreach Coordinator for Montgomery County, Maryland

Passing along this great resource from our partners at the Maryland Department of Aging, which can be part of your emergency preparedness toolkit:

Montgomery County seniors, 65 years of age and older, are encouraged to sign up for a free telephonic system that does daily checks on participants.  The program, sponsored by the Maryland Department of Aging, is the first in the country.

Every day a telephone call will be placed to a participant at a regularly scheduled time.  These calls will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. as close as possible to the one-hour time block pre-selected by the participant.  If the participant does not answer the first call, they will be tried two more times.  If those calls go unanswered, additional calls will be made to notify an alternative person who is selected by the participant during program enrollment.   The alternate individual could be an adult child, neighbor or another loved one.

Any Maryland resident who is 65 years of age and older and has a landline or cell phone can join.

Individuals must apply on their own behalf.  Information gathered includes first and last name, county of residence, telephone number, date of birth, name and telephone number of alternate contact person and time between 8 and 10 a.m. or between 2 and 4 p.m. when the participant prefers to receive a daily telephone call.

Go to the Department of Aging’s website http://www.aging.maryland.gov/Pages/senior-call-check.aspx  to register or register by telephone by calling 1-800-243-3425.

For information about services and programs available to seniors in Montgomery County, call the Aging and Disability Resource Unit at 240-777-3000.

Hi Roy Kelley - This is more comprehensive for seniors.  I have volunteered for Meals on Wheels and part of that is making sure the senior is ok every day.

Hi Roy... what a fantastic program. Since it's been some years since I was 65, I'm always a bit amused by programs that are geared for seniors over 65... I still don't think of myself as a senior and I suspect it will still be a while before I do. (Although that does not stop me from always asking for my senior discount! )

This is a great idea and could save a life if not hundreds. It would also help people dealing with depression. ..

Roy Kelley - Excellent idea. Immediately after reading your post, I got on the Town of Flower Mound's website and made recommendation referencing the Maryland Program.

Being the first state to implement such a vital program is to be commended. I hope Flower Mound will do the same! I hope this one gets featured and other are motivated to spread the word to where they live too!
