What To Do When They Won’t Play Nice in the Sandbox.
The other day Aida Pinto in the Q&A section asked how we handled negative/offensive comments. And Carol Williams asked how to delete spammers. Yesterday (Sunday) there was one who kept popping up all over the place.
Spam and unkind comments do exist, just as on any site but it’s usually kept to a minimum here.
And, because our posts are ours, you can choose to do what you want with them. Walk on by, delete them, or respond to unpleasant comments.
Spam -Not the kind in the can but the ubiquitous comments that for some odd reason think that we want to buy purses, shoes or some other item from the hinterlands. Or those who feel the need to advertise their services in the comment section. Clearly, they have not read the Community Guidelines or they did and decided it didn’t matter.
In a nutshell, spam is annoying. Does it impact the SEO or anything like that for ActiveRain? I don’t know.
Does it make the community as a whole look bad?
It depends upon who’s looking.
What to do
But what you can do is take your little mouse and hover over the bottom right of the comment. You’ll see: Report Comment.
You can click Report and the staff will take it from there. And you get 5 points (up to 5 per day) for doing this.
Typically, the staff prefers to track the IP address of the spammer so in the past, they have asked that we not delete the comment. But again, if it bothers you...delete it!
To my knowledge (and correct me if I’m wrong) you do have the ability to delete a comment if it is on your own post.
Ugly comments-The community doesn’t get them as often as you might think. However, on occasion, they do pop up.
It’s your post and you are always free to delete a comment if you don’t think it’s appropriate.
I can’t remember deleting a comment...maybe once. If someone is being a jerk in the comment section of my post, I usually let the comment stand so that others can see this as an example of their character or at least get a good laugh.
If it’s on someone else’s post and depending upon the circumstances, I may pipe in to support the blogger.
For the most part, though, I’d rather put my energies towards positive things. Other than the second it takes to Report someone, I just keep moving on.
