What To Do When They Won’t Play Nice in the Sandbox.

The other day Aida Pinto in the Q&A section asked how we handled sandboxnegative/offensive comments. And Carol Williams asked how to delete spammers. Yesterday (Sunday) there was one who kept popping up all over the place.

Spam and unkind comments do exist, just as on any site but it’s usually kept to a minimum here.

And, because our posts are ours, you can choose to do what you want with them. Walk on by, delete them, or respond to unpleasant comments.

Spam -Not the kind in the can but the ubiquitous comments that for some odd reason think that we want to buy purses, shoes or some other item from the hinterlands. Or those who feel the need to advertise their services in the comment section. Clearly, they have not read the Community Guidelines or they did and decided it didn’t matter.

In a nutshell, spam is annoying. Does it impact the SEO or anything like that for ActiveRain?  I don’t know.

Does it make the community as a whole look bad?

It depends upon who’s looking.

What to do

But what you can do is take your little mouse and hover over the bottom right of the comment. You’ll see:   Report   Comment.

You can click Report and the staff will take it from there. And you get 5 points (up to 5 per day) for doing this.

Typically, the staff prefers to track the IP address of the spammer so in the past, they have asked that we not delete the comment. But again, if it bothers you...delete it!

To my knowledge (and correct me if I’m wrong) you do have the ability to delete a comment if it is on your own post.

my blogUgly comments-The community doesn’t get them as often as you might think. However, on occasion, they do pop up.

It’s your post and you are always free to delete a comment if you don’t think it’s appropriate.

I can’t remember deleting a comment...maybe once. If someone is being a jerk in the comment section of my post, I usually let the comment stand so that others can see this as an example of their character or at least get a good laugh.

If it’s on someone else’s post and depending upon the circumstances, I may pipe in to support the blogger.

For the most part, though, I’d rather put my energies towards positive things. Other than the second it takes to Report someone, I just keep moving on.

HI Kathy Streib Great blog with some helpful tips...and reminders that what we say or post can be seen by many!! As we see in the news everyday...those words or posts or videos are destroying a lot of careers with the advent of social media.

Hi Kathy Streib, thankfully, it doesn't happen often. We can all do our part by reporting, unfortunately, whether be spam or ugly comments, they will always be there.

Good evening Kathy Streib,

So glad to see this featured! I've seen some spam lately and reported and did delete one from my post. I haven't had to do that in a while. I guess we are going to always deal with it but hopefully will not take up a great deal of time with it.

I don't mind a difference of opinion and if presented respectfully, it is welcometo the discussion. Being mean and unkind doesn't have a place here and I am not afraid to use my delete button.

Hi Kathy

A very nice reminder for all about playing nice. Too bad the spammers and scammers won't see this or care. Given the number of people here, and the number of comments and posts, I suppose the bad behavior is really a small percentage, although when the spam ramps up it's pretty annoying. I have rarely deleted a comment other than spam.

People who behave like that have a short life span here, thankfully Kathy. I leave the comments but they will remove theirs most of the time to lessen the impact. It is a reflection on them, not me!

Kathy, I report them all the time with the hope that they block the spammers from the technical end... indeed it would be easier for me just to delete, but I do go to the trouble to help the community....Endre

Kathy, I report the spam as much as possible. It seems like it's gotten better lately. For the rude comments, they have to be pretty bad for me to delete them. I don't normally respond but, occasionally I'll respond if they're left on another bloggers page. There's just no excuse for it.

Hi Kathy Streib,
Great points about playing nice in the sandbox.  It's just so hard to ignore those who don't have any sandbox common sense! I know Support must be overwhelmed with all the issues in front of them.  Spam is just one of them. I was hoping there was a way for us to help so they can focus on other things that take far more brains than I have.  Lol

I do make a point of reporting members who have set up an account specifically for spamming.  I usually cut and paste the entire spam message and send thru the support link so they can see exactly what is going on and delete the account... as well as block the IP from setting up a new account.   I can't think of a time I deleted a comment on a post (other than spam).  I'm fine with someone disagreeing with me.  The way they comment says more about them than me and it's not really a bad thing to leave it there for the world to see.

Have an awesome day!

I have been really grateful these past ten years I've participated on ActiveRain.  For the most part folks here play nice in sandbox.  I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I have deleted a comment from any of my posts.

I always report the Spammers but didn't know we were given points for that. Hmm, learn something new every day. And yes, if the spam is on my post, I usually delete it because I wasn't sure what AR staff would do or if they tracked the spammer.

Why would someone go to the trouble of setting up an AR account just to spam us? Doesn't make sense. But I appreciate the information, Kathy. Like I said, we learn something new every day.

I especially like the part about leaving bad comments so people can see the commenter for who they are.
