Can you believe that school is starting just right around the corner! Many of you have children that are in elementary all the way to high school, but some of you might even be having your kid go off to college or in the process of thinking about colleges. This can always send a parent in worry overload, so in order to ease some of the comfort we thought it would be a good idea to provide brief descriptions of some of the local colleges. Now there are 29 colleges within a 50-mile radius of Greenville, so we will cover the primary colleges. The majority of these schools have fantastic programs for transitioning into college, so that way you and your child can take down your stress levels a notch.

Clemson University is one of the best schools in South Carolina. Clemson is also very popular as many of you know how great their football program is. The school has over 80 undergraduate majors and 110 graduate degree programs, so you can study just about anything here. The location is right by the North side of Lake Hartwell. On average there are 23,000 students. Tuition per year runs around 15K, so it’s very wise to apply for FAFSA, scholarships and grants. They have several different options for student housing. The first year you can only stay in certain communities, but after that it’s your choice out of 24 residence halls. If you break down the cost, the student will be paying between $430 - $1,100 a month. They also have several options for dining plans and have a whopping 18 dining facilities. The cheapest being 30 meals per semester costing $645 ranging all the way to unlimited meals and 15 guest’s meals costing $2,215 for that semester.

The University of South Carolina Upstate is also well known. The Upstate Campus is a branch off of the main Campus in Columbia. The Upstate Campus is located in Spartanburg. The most popular areas of study are arts and sciences, nursing, education then business. The Mary Black School of Nursing is part of this college and is a highly sought out after field. The school enrolls a little under 6,000 students a year. Tuition is billed every semester. For a full-time student, 12-16 credit hours, the tuition is $5,604 per semester. First year students are required to live on campus for the first fall and spring semester. Prices per semester range from $2,555 to $3,295 depending on which place you choose to live. There are three different meal plans ranging from $1,353 to $1,612 per semester.

North Greenville University is a Christian school that ranks #5 out of South Carolina’s best colleges. The college is located North of Greenville, past Travelers Rest. There are many different degree paths you can take at this University to include business and sport professions, Christian studies, communication, education, fine arts, humanities, science and math. The school only enrolls around 2,500 students a year allowing the teacher to student ratio to be smaller and more ability to help the students with questions. A full-time students tuition is $9,875 per semester. Housing cost $2,450 and the meal plan allowing 20 meals per week costs $2,670.

Bob Jones University is another Christian college in Greenville. Since it’s a Christian college, the main areas of study is ministry, but there is also arts, science and nursing. The enrollment for each year averages 2,400 students. The teacher student ratio is only 12:1. Tuition costs $8,625 per semester. Room and board is about $3,500.

Another college right in Greenville is Furman University. This University has over 60 programs to choose from focusing in the liberal arts and sciences. Furman University enrolls less than 3,000 students each year. An average class size is only 19 students which once again provides more attention to the students needs. This school is high ranking, so tuition is the most expensive estimating about 49K a year. Average housing costs are $7,680 a year and unlimited food plan is $5,578.

Greenville Technical College is a great choice because there are several different programs of study. The two primary programs with many different degrees under each are the Health and Wellness Program and the Technology Program. There are four main campuses with an enrollment of almost 12,000 students. The main, Barton Campus is located right near downtown Greenville. The Benson Campus serves Greer and Taylors, the Brashier Campus serves Mauldin, Simpsonville and Fountain Inn and the Northwest Campus serves Travelers Rest, Berea and West Greenville. Tuition is also reasonable. Students who live in Greenville County and taking a full class load each semester (12 credits) would cost them $2,295. Any student who applies to FAFSA and meets the requirements can receive lottery funds meaning that it would only cost them $1,155 each semester. Plus, applying to FAFSA often results in grants meaning even more of a reduction in tuition. There is student housing, but it is limited. Honestly, most students and parents find it more reasonable to live at home or either get an apartment.

Now that you know a little about each of the main campuses around Greenville you have more of an understanding of costs, location and student living. Costs can be intimidating, but there are always ways to decrease those amounts such as using FAFSA and applying to scholarships.
