How Do You Measure Success?

Real Estate How Do You Measure SuccessWhen is enough enough?

We stress out trying to achieve the American Dream.  We work too many hours and take too few vacations.

All in the name of achieving success.

Our children are pushed into sports, music and STEM programs, all with the hope of becoming successful adults in areas they may not even enjoy.  As a result, the cycle continues.  The rat race if you will, gains another participant.

All in the name of success.

To an outsider looking in, those hard-working, over-achieving adults may appear to be successful.  They may even have the clothes, house, and car that society has told us represent success.  But if you ask the individual if they feel successful, you may be surprised by their answer.

Most people don't feel they are successful for a number of reasons.  One reason for not feeling successful is because they haven't taken the time to define what success means to them.

Money Won't Buy You Happiness

When you think of measuring success your first thought probably goes towards having more money.  That's how most of us were taught to measure success.  The more you made, the more successful you were thought to be.

But is money the end all?

We've seen and heard about celebrities and athletes who earned millions of dollars, yet still something critical was missing in their lives.  Despite their outward success, internally they were unhappy.  In her book, "The Happiness Track," Dr. Emma Seppala provides a different perspective on the meaning and measuring of success.   The first step is having a personal definition of success.

What Does Success Mean To You?

  • Having more money to travel the world?
  • Being able to have a comfortable retirement?
  • The ability to spend more time with your family?
  • Working in your community to help better the lives of others?
  • Using your skills and abilities to solve world issues?
  • Being a life-long learner?

Success Doesn't Have to Be About Money

Thinking of yourself as successful doesn't have to be about how much money you earn or how much money you have in your bank account.  Success can mean whatever you want it to mean.  Once you know your definition of success, you will know when you've achieved it.

The reason so many of us stay on the hamster wheel is because we look to the world to define success for us.  We keep thinking that it we work harder and make more money we will be viewed, a success.

But the truth is much more simple.  When we have a clear vision of what success looks like to us, we can create a path to get there.  When you don't know where you want to go, you'll never get there and you'll never know when enough is enough.

Enjoy the Journey

It seems that every one you talk to is trying to do too much.  Trying to please too many people and being miserable in the process.  All in the name of trying to become successful.

Achieving success doesn't have to be stressful.  The journey becomes stressful when you aren't clear on your destination.  When you have clearly defined what success means to you, your activities are focused and done with intent.  Your journey becomes meaningful and purposeful.  You are no longer making money simply to accumulate.  Your goals are clearly defined and you have a plan.

You Are Now a Success

When one goal is reached, another goal is set.  Most of us have multiple things we want to accomplish in this life, but we don't take the time to celebrate when we achieve a goal.  We check it off and get busy with the next goal.

I challenge you to set a goal, achieve that goal and then take some time to bask in your greatness.  Take it in and pat yourself on the back.  Relish in the fact that you achieved what you set out to achieve.

You are now a success.

Be prosperous!
