It is said that Hula is the heart of Hawaii and anyone in the islands knows just how near and dear this special cultural dance is to the people here. Whether you’re a fan of the annual Merrie Monarch Festival or are just interested in learning more about this unique dance, you’re in luck because this September there will be a special hula competition right here on Maui.
On Sept. 8th, you will have a chance to watch the Kū Mai Ka Hula, which features award-winning halaus competing in solo and group performances. During this competition, there will be male and female dancers performing kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula dances. Halaus from as far as way as Japan and as close as right here on Maui will be competing this fall. This year’s judges include Kamakaokalani Herrod, Iwalani Kalima, Ulalia Woodside, and Pueo Pata. If you’ve never been to a competition before and are curious what it entails, watch a video from the 2016 halau competition. It’s incredible!
