What does a gray spot mean at Target?

I have been told by my kids that I listen to my IPod to loud; the first thing I had to say was what???  No way I can barely hear my books on tape sometimes?  So my son did a very detailed investigation of my ear phones and found that the ear phones that have lovingly hugged my IPod like a python for the last 2 years are indeed the reason for my lack of hearing.

So off to our local Target to get new ear phones at first I couldn't find them but knowing that there almost always is a young person close by wearing my favorite color red waiting to help... Ok so Nick was the young person for the day he of coarse went directly to the place I had been starring at like a dork for 10 mins, to my relief it was out of stock and Nick informed me for future reference if you see a gray circle sticker on the display tag (the thing that it hangs on) that means it is not even in the store so don't bother asking.  I of coarse needed him to check still and with no patronizing at all he waved the wand of knowledge across the bar code that once held IPod ear buds and said yep nothing.

I won't go into detail about the sad example of "equivalent to IPod ear plugs" I did buy and plan to return today but needless to say if you see a gray dot on the display tag don't ask the idem is no longer in the building.
