Our Carlsbad Crows

By
Real Estate Agent with Solutions Real Estate CA DRE #01490977

We've been "enjoying," or perhaps I should say are entertained by, the nightly migration of the crows.

They start gathering in the trees by the hundreds across the canyon from our house in the evening, usually around dinner time. It takes 30 minutes or so for the community to assemble in the trees, with an occasional outburst of noise now and then caused by who knows what.

Carlsbad crows by our house

And then, usually while we are eating on the back patio, someone decides it's time to move on and they leave en masse, crowing loudly. The video did not turn out (but who really wants to listen to all that noise!!) and this is only a small collection of them. It takes 5 - 10 minutes for them to finish the flight over the house to the new home community next to our neighborhood. They seem to like roosting on the houses and in the yards - there are no trees yet.

Hi Jeff... I've never seen anything quite like this density of crows at one time. I see them in our skies here on occasion, but not like this.

Good afternoon Jeff - oh wow.  Of course, I also think about Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds."

When the trees are eventually cut down they will roost on whatever remains.. usually electric lines.  I wonder if they go to the new construction area because it's imprinted in their DNA to go to that location?

Ron and Alexandra Seigel

This is new for them since last year, and thankfully for only an hour or so.

Hi Anthony Acosta - ALLATLANTACONDOS.COM  - thanks for stopping by.

Nina Hollander  - and this is really only a small part of the crew...they are called a murder of crows! It has to be over a thousand, and sometimes they are much more flocked together when flying. I suppose someone has studied all this. Thank goodness the noise doesn't last long.

Hi Mary Ann Daniell Central Texas Realtor  - makes sense, although they never used to go there, unless it was before we moved, and it was all grasslands and no trees. Sometimes they hang out on our street, on the roofs, and in the trees for a brief time. Interesting to watch, but pretty noisy. And this is all new in the last year.

Ray and I were somewhere last week and they were lining every single power line in sight! They're quiet when they're roosting but, when they fly away, they really ARE loud & disruptive. I can't believe how loud they are either!

Morning Jeff.

Frankly, I haven't seen a crow around my neck of the woods in a long time.  Of course, I haven't been looking for them either.

In Oklahoma they are so overwhelming and the damage they do to crops casues annual shooting events. I am not into guns but this is a part of our culture.

I think a few of them decided to stay back and hang out in our canyon by our home Jeff;p we have a flock of crows in Sorrento Mesa / UTC too. Bigger than one would imagine and quite loud.

We don't have crows in our area, but we do have lots of deer and Canadian Geese.  Park and Rec regularly oils the geese eggs to try to keep the population down.
