If you're planning on moving interstate and you own a car, you will have to decide how exactly you're going to move it. Will you drive it yourself or pay a removalist company to transport it for you? It is important that you consider your options carefully, as you can incur heavy fines if you illegally transport your vehicle into another state.
Unregistered cars
Illegal
Driving your car into another state without proper registration, number plates, or any proof of ownership. You can also pay to have it transported via shipping or on a truck while it is unregistered.
Legal
If you are transporting an unregistered vehicle to another state it is necessary that you have an unregistered vehicle permit. You cannot simply drive a car that is not registered and has no number plates on the road. The only occasion when you do not need a unregistered vehicle permit to transport a car that is not registered is when you are driving it to the department of transport to register it, in which case you must have a valid CTP insurance and a completed vehicle registration application.
Registered cars
Illegal
Drive a vehicle that is registered in a different state to the one you are residing in.
Legal
Once you are living permanently in your new state, you will have three months to register your car and apply for a new driver's license before you may be fined. It is illegal to drive a car in a state different to the state where that car is registered after the three months. You can easily apply to get a new driver's license and number plates and your closest Department of Transport offices.
Vehicle transport companies
Illegal
Transporting your car with an unregistered company that is not licensed not transport vehicles.
Legal
Ensure that the company you have chosen is legal and is registered with the department of transport, able to transport vehicles interstate. They vehicle that is transporting your car will also need to be registered and be displaying number plates on the front and back of the vehicle. If you send your car with an unregistered business, your car may not be delivered and you may end up having to pay additional fines.
Driver's license
Illegal
The driver of the vehicle transporting your car, or you if you are driving your own car, do not own a current driver's license while transporting the car interstate.
Legal
Make sure your driver's license is valid. This means if your license is about to expire during the time that you will be moving, make sure you renew it beforehand, or apply to get a license from the state you are moving to. If you are using a company to transport your car, make sure you check that the driver has a valid license.
If you're still unsure about what to do with your car, it is best to check with your local Department of Transport and ask them for advice on how to move your car interstate.
