HISTORY OF SKYSCRAPERS

Like many major cities, Dallas boasts beautiful skyscrapers. The first steel-frame skyscraper, Home Insurance Building was built in the year 1885 in downtown Chicago, located on the corner of Adams and LaSalle Street. It was demolished in 1931 and replaced with the Field Building, also known as the LaSalle Bank Building. The architect for the Home Insurance Building skyscraper was William Lee Baron Jenney. His successful innovation gave rise to many exceptionally talented architects who constructed skyscrapers that continues to sprawl all over the United States.

SKYSCRAPERS - VISUAL IDENTITY

The skyscraper in the photograph in North Dallas can't be missed when you park in the parking lot at Northpark Mall.  City branding creates a visual identity when there are skyscrapers towering over luxury malls that have shops such as Nordstrum, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Dilliards, AIX Armanie Exchange, Versace, Travelx Worldwide Money Currency, Louis Vuitton Mens Store, Louis Vuitton, Longchamp Paris, Kate Spade New York, Sees Candy, SWATCH, Scotch & Soda, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sarku Japan, Shinola, Saint Laurent, Na Hoku, Morphe, Montblanc, and many, many more.

INNOVATION

The art of marketing  must be innovative - eye-catching! Designed to perfection! Innovators understand consumer marketing. Concepts must be original, unique, culturally diverse, stand out from the crowd. They must be high quality, unique branding, and defines who you are! To be the best you must have a style that differentiates you from the competition.

Patricia I have been to the top of the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Hancock Tower in Boston, and of course the Empire State Building in New York.  These are amazing structures.

George Souto - I wish my dad was alive. He worked from the ground up on the Sears Tower in Chicago and the John Hancock Skyscraper in downtown Chicago. He would have beamed with pride if I could have told him what you said.

They truly are amazing and my heart still hurts for many of the stories I heard about construction workers from my father. It was all a labor of love, blood, sweat, and tears. To think, it was those who were involved in the construction process that put food on the tables, for people like me and my family. They left a legacy and these skyscrapers should never be taken for granted.

While I think that is a stunning skyscraper, I have a grandkid who has been crazy about cars since diapers.  He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering and now works for Roush designing power trains.  I know he'd love your pictured cars!

Myrl Jeffcoat - Thank you, very much for the feature in the Photos Group.

I hopoe you share those car photos with your grandkid who is working on his degree in Mechanical Engineering. I think students striving to achieve success in this area of expertise will do very well. Their future is right around the bend!

Best wishes to all your grandkids. Each one has unique talent and very, very bright!

I am not a big fan of heights, so even looking out of the window from the top of that building would scare me a little bit, haha.

marti garaughty - Thanks for being featured in the "Art of Marketing You." I appreciate it, very much. I have not read "The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand." I searched and found a summary and I would be interested in reading it too! Thanks for the recommendation.

May you have a wonderful day!

marti garaughty - There's a lot to absorb when reading "The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand." I went back to find the excerpt that you referenced:

From this simplest necessity to the highest religious abstraction, from the wheel to the skyscraper, everything we are and we have comes from a single attribute of man -the function of his reasoning mind.”   ― Ayn RandThe Fountainhead

Marti, could it be that the skyscraper is a vision by man, an artistic construction designed to rise towards the sky to unite with the heavens or the universe? In looking at my photograph, it's easy to see the reflection of the clouds and how they move in relation to time of day, direction, and where one is standing. For the creator on earth whose dream to construct the skyscraper perhaps it was a religious experience or a sign of the times based on culture, religion, or the desire to accomplish something greater, an expression of being more powerful than others? In any case, you got my wheels turning!

Thanks!

Patricia

Patricia Feager   Ayn Rand and her philosophy is a deep topic, nothing I could begin to get into in a few sentences.

The Fountainhead was a great intro to her ideas before reading her book Atlas Shrugged which I've read about 20 times since my early teens.

A lot of people hate Rand and her ideas, many of us love and really relate to her ideas. It depends on how we see the world, society and ultimately who is responsible for our own happiness, success, etc...

marti garaughty - From what I saw, Ayn Rand's "philosophy is a deep topic!"

Thank you for introducing me to her style of writing. She is an amazing critical thinker who seems more complex to me than someone like Carl G. Jung. Both do open up the mind! I'll have to read more of her books, which can't be appreciated in a day.

I'm glad you shared that you read the same books more than once. I do that too, and each time I read the same book, I learn something new. Enlightenment is found in old books and reading them over and over makes one wiser! I always know when I have a good book when I read it and put it back on my bookshelf for future reading.

I liked what you said in your last paragraph. It's so true!

Love the photo of the skyscraper and the collage as well, Patricia. What an interesting building and a great history lesson too. I can never get enough of our skyline here and ours is super small compared to yours in Dallas!
