My cute chicken house in Haiku Maui - happy chickens!

My laying chickens are now happily housed in their own little chicken coop at the end of our yard where we can keep an eye on them.

A new hen house for my Haiku chickens.

You might remember these hens when they were in their "chicken tractor" which was a pretty good setup until they got full size.  It was a bit crowded for all 8 of them at the time.  One hen didn't make it, just up and died overnight and then there were 7.  Still a bit crowded so my wonderful husband built them this small but functional little house... all from reclaimed and recycled materials.  Isn't it cute!

Now they are relocated and have a permanent yard instead of a fresh patch of grass every day, so it looks pretty crappy.  The love to scratch and dig in the ground and the grass can't take too much of it. But they have a nice indoor environment with perches for sleeping, and nest boxes for laying their eggs.  Food and water is continuously supplied inside and they have pretty much everything they want.  Of course they want to be in the big yard, so they get about an hour or two in the evening to run free and look for bugs in the garden.

Happy Haiku hens

Life is pretty good for chickens in Haiku Maui.  It could be good for you too, so start your search for a Haiku home right here.

Georgie, here in Los Angeles a house like that would be considered as an additional place to add to the square footage of a home...in our case if we had something like that Diane would want me to move into it and run my home office from there:)) Endre

Based on housing values in Maui you could probably rent that out for $1000 a month so the chickens should feel special.

That looks like a delightful home for those fortunate Hawaiian chickens, Georgie.  My daughter also raises chickens.  All hens, no roosters!

Myrl Jeffcoat Thanks for the feature!  We also have no roosters, unless they are the wild ones who come to see what's going on.

Ralph Post I don't think there is a grass in the world that is durable enough for chickens - they just love to scratch the ground looking for tasty treats.  They can dig a hole 6 inches deep to find what things.  The solution is to have rotating locations so the grass can regrow.
