Lefties - Today is Your Day! 15 Facts About Left-Handed People
August 13 is Left Handers Day!
I typically 'miss' this day but, today I'm celebrating with my fellow lefties - OUR day! Growing up in a world of righties, for me, adaptability comes to mind as a left-hander. Single-slotted soup ladles are made for right-handed people as were ALL baseball mitts when I was growing up; desks, spiral binders and so much more!
My take on being left-handed - I think we're more adaptive; we began adapting to a right-handed world at a very early age. My grandmother was a leftie (the one that died at 106) and my youngest son is as well.
My advice for my son when he was growing up - savor being different, embrace it and the world will be your oyster!
Here are 15 fun facts about left-handed people:
- Make up roughly 12% of the population
- Use the right side of the brain the most
- More likely to be the extreme on the intelligence scale
- Twice as likely to be a man
- Better at 3D perception and thinking
- Better at multi-tasking
- Make especially good athletes (almost 40% of the top tennis players are lefties)
- Recover from strokes faster
- More likely to pursue creative careers (arts, music, sports, and information-technology fields)
- Of the eight most recent U.S Presidents, 4 have been left handed
- Left handed college graduates go on to become 26% wealthier than right handed graduates
- On a keyboard, there are 1,447 English words typed solely with the left hand, while only 187 are typed with only the right hand ('only' is one of them!)
- Adjust to seeing underwater quicker (who knew?)

Happy Left-Handers Day!
