After many years in the real estate industry, I’ve decided to open my own brokerage. I’m happy to announce the opening of Montgomery County’s newest real estate brokerage – American Foursquare Realty.
So – just what is an American Foursquare?
An American Foursquare is a style of house popular in the United Stated from the 1890’s through the 1930’s. A style of home still seen across the country today.
The hallmarks of this style include a square, boxy design, two-and-one-half stories high home, usually with four large rooms on each floor, a center dormer, and a large front porch with inviting wide stairs. The boxy shape provides a maximum amount of interior room space, which was a great design as the small towns in our country grew and offered home sites with limited space. Other common features included a hipped roof, with a walk-up attic that many times is used as additional living space.
The efficiency of the design continued on the inside. The “foursquare” in the design’s name came from the four square rooms found on each floor. Typically, the first floor had and entry room, a living room, dining room and kitchen. The four main rooms on the second floor were four good sized square bedrooms.
This home style is instantly recognizable and utterly American.
Here’s a great example of an American Foursquare home. This Sears advertisement enticed you to order the kit to build this home on your lot. The complete kit could be yours for only $2,495. Stop by our offices to see this plan and others – and lots of Lansdale memorabilia.
