Welcome to my new series of videos called Mission Viejo on The Move, highlighting businesses and community groups in the City of Mission Viejo, California. Each episode will feature an interview with the business owner or manager who will talk about what they do.
Featured today is Boardwalk Barbers:
John: Well good afternoon and welcome to another edition of Mission Viejo on the Move. I'm John Alesi with Century 21 and today I'm here at Boardwalk Barbers, and we're going to find out all about this great shop, talking with the owner Henrick in just a moment. Let's get started.
John: All right Henrick, thank you very much for having me here at the barbershop.
Henrick: Thanks for coming John. I appreciate it.
John: Well alright, well tell me a little bit about the barbershop here.
Henrick: So basically, this started up as a hobby 27 years ago. Not the shop but just me, me being a barber.
Henrick: And it started in the family it runs in my family actually. It goes back to my great uncle, he was a barber in Germany for several years, basically all his life, since 1952.
Henrick; And then my Mom she taught me basics, basics of the hair cutting and then I, you know, I was trying to take the school kids, my friends, my brother, kids from the street lined up.
John: Kids would experiment. (Laughter)
Henrick: Yeah, they don't get mad at you. (Laughter) So my Mom she had her salon closed on Sundays and she gave me her keys and I opened up and I lined up with those, you know kids, and I didn't charge anything at the beginning just to be able to practise, and once I got better and better then I finished the school, finished the barbering and basically I'm doing this for a living, for the last 17 years but hair cutting started like 27 years ago,
Henrick: And my wife she got into the business 7 years ago, she also finished barbering and you know, this was our biggest dream to have a barbershop one day and doing this together.
John: So, you opened up Boardwalk Barbers how long ago?
Henrick: It was 13 months ago, a little over a year, and we got here in Mission Viejo because this is a great location, we live in Laguna Niguel, so it's just literally
John: Close by.
Henrick: Everybody close by and we love this area it's basically, 2, 3 high schools here around here, it’s a suburbia so a lot of families around here, business men, and it's just a great location we love Mission Viejo.
John: I've had a chance to look around the shop, tell everybody what to expect when they come in to Boardwalk Barbers.
Henrick: Basically, we want to build up a clientele that feels at home when they come in. This is a part of the family, we know everybody's name if possible, I'm terrible at names but I'm good at faces. (Laughter) So basically want to invite everybody to have a good vibe, have a good service that we provide, have a good haircut, have a good experience and have a touch of traditional barbering. That's the major thing that barbering is coming back. It used to be like a one man show an old gentleman in a white smock, but this business is coming back and its growing, it's one of, it's not the best but one of the fastest growing industry all over the world.
John: So, what makes your barbershop special and what kinds of services can customers find here?
Henrick: We want to create a name (brand), Boardwalk Barbers, to be distinguished and stand out by the services that we provide here. That's why we have skilled barbers, that why everybody that works here, has skills, has a lot of years of experience, I have a couple of young guys and I have barbers with a lot of experience and lots of years, so basically what, everything that we do here it, we want to make sure that it's like a signature service. All the haircuts, all the shaves, everything that we do, the latest style from the, from the earliest different styles that we had in the past so traditional barbering and traditional haircuts and the newest styles, we do hard part, the line-up, the fades, everything that now, you know, nowadays kids running around. So basically, we just want to have, creating like a name, creating a service, creating a line (brand) that everybody that comes here can enjoy.
John: So, the young kids, they, they want something different than an old guy like me wants.
Henrick: Yeah, of course!
John: What are looking for?
Henrick: Basically, we have a new line, it's called the line-up and a hard part, and a comb over. These type of haircuts that came back just literally a few years ago it's, it goes back basically to the sixties, but it looks a little bit different, with the fade, that goes all the way down to the skin on the side and the hard part that we shave in with a straight razor and the line-up, we make the basic touch with the straight razors and we give hot neck shave, with hot foam, for every customer basically that's included in our service.
John: So, I notice you have the little foam machine back there on the side.
John: So that's part of every haircut.
Henrick: Yes, and then also when it comes back to the straight razor shave, the hot towel shave, that's when we're using the hot foam, applying the hot towel and these chairs can be declined and it goes back and then its's a very, very specific and good service that people like.
John: Now when I was in here yesterday doing some filming, you were telling me about the shop itself. Let's talk a little bit about how the shop came to be.
Henrick: Yeah, like I said it's family started, my wife and I, we started this whole shop and both of our hearts are in it, my wife is, basically run the business part of it, but she also, she's a barber as well and everything that you see here, all the fixtures, everything was hand made. We were on a budget so we include everything, I mean everybody from the family, my brother in law and my wife and myself, basically we built everything here, of course all these fixtures that needed to be sanded down and put together, it was all handmade, everything that you see here it's handmade and it was made by us. So my wife who is uh, doing the business part of it, and help me running the whole business, she is giving me a lots of good ideas, and I'm very grateful to have a wife like that because this place wouldn't be the place it is, as it is today, if it had not been for her.
John: The wife, the wives really support us.
Henrick: This is a family work because we were on budget and wanted to create something simple, but very good looking, and my wife gave the idea to use, you know, like a coffee shop/industrial look, wood and pipe, and as you see here everything is like pipe and wood and, reclaim, reclaimed wood, so everything we sanded down and put it together, bought the materials and even these little fixtures were created, hand made by the help of the family of my brother in law and my wife,
John: So this basically was an empty building and you brought it to life with…
John: With your design and with your fixtures.
John: Your hard work, your hand work..
Henrick: Yeah, my brother in law he's an engineer so he put it together, everything in his computer, by us telling them what we want and then he came up with the idea, how the finish should look like, and then he was helping me out with the whole thing, buying the materials, you know, and my wife was also involved with all the design of the finish, should look like.
John: You did a great job really like I said, it has a good look when you first walk in the door and as you look around, the, the chairs are really smooth and new and it’s just got a good vibe.
Henrick: That's what we wanted to have, like creating a vibe for our customers. Once they come in they feel at home, that's why everything looks like a, like a garage finish, like industrial look, so that's inviting the customers and they feel good when they come in because this stands out, it's different, it looks like it's modern.
John: Yeah, yeah, it's different than any barbershop I've been into.
Henrick: Yeah, certainly.
John: It's a great look.
Henrick: Thank you.
John: You guys did a great job on it, awesome.
Henrick: Thank you.
John: So, Henrick, how are you guys giving back to the community?
Henrick: We are supporting our high school kids,
Henrick: Mission Viejo High School basketball team that we support, and we do a, we appreciate our military and our senior citizens, everybody who is 65 and older, we apply senior discount and everybody who is serving, like active military, no matter what branch, we also apply a military discount for their haircuts.
John: Very good, very good. Thank you for that. What about your location, let's talk about the location of the shop.
Henrick: The location is here, in the heart of Mission Viejo, it is just only one mile from the Five freeway on Alicia, it Alicia and Jeronimo at the Gateway Plaza.
John: And what's the address here?
Henrick: it's 24000 Alicia Parkway.
John: What are the hours here at the shop?
Henrick: Well, we are open 7 days a week, every day, Monday to Friday it's 9:00 to 7:00, Saturday it's a little shorter day, 9:00 to 6:00 and Sunday is the shortest day which is 10:00 to 4:00, but we just wanted to, you know, be here all the time, I know there's a lot of family around here because this is a suburbia, so that's why we wanted to create a Sunday service for all of those families that, that work during the week and they don't have any other time to come to, to get hair haircut.
John: We're, we're a seven day a week community so,
Henrick: Yeah, yeah.
John: So it's great that you offer the service. You mentioned that she does the social media and you do have social media presence, internet, where do we find you on the internet?
Henrick: We have our website which is boardwalkbarbers.com and you can find a little bit of story about us, and you can find out the services that we have and our prices. In the meantime we have our Facebook and we have our Instagram, so we're posting the specials and we're posting our haircuts and services as well.
John: Very good, well Henrick thank you very much for taking time to talk with me, I really appreciate the time.
Henrick: Thanks for coming out.
John: And you're welcome, Thank you. I'll be in for a haircut real soon.
