Can you make money from blogging? (and working from home?)

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

Believe it or not, yes you can!  And, I'm happy to report that I'm one of those bloggers.

So first let me mention that I had no idea that this was even possible.  I have been blogging since 2010 and started my own blog in 2011.  I blogged for my business...and it worked.  It really worked!  (I keep hearing Sally Field in my head now..."They like me.  They really like me).

I learned how to blog and how to do SEO so I could drive traffic and leads for my flooring business.  I was thrilled with this.  And, I was always so busy in my business.  And, I kind of feel like I had my head in the sand...not realizing that I could have capitalized on other opportunities at same time...to make passive income.

How dumb is that? I could have been doing this years ago...and building a lot of savings and making a lot more money.

One of the most helpful blogs that I found was from Carly Campbell, owner of MommyOnPurpose.  I know, you're probably thinking what the heck?  What does that have to do with blogging and making money on line?

So, bear with me for a minute.  Carly has her own blog - and it's for moms.  She mainly blogs about pregnancy, post partum, having a new baby and all of the things related to being a new mom (and new mom to be).  And, her blog has been doing great...and she's been earning a LOT of money from it.  And, she was able to do this REALLY fast (and much faster than I have).

I believe in her first year (and while she was pregnant), she was making $3,000-$5,000 per month by the end of year 1.  (And, BTW, one of the main reasons she did so well so fast is that she mastered pinterest...a resource that I've found super valuable, too).

Carly loves to help other bloggers, and she has developed a FREE course on How to start a blog...and how to make money from it.  She has been one of my favorite resources since I started to monetize my blog.

Carly now makes a LOT more money from her blog.  She is a master at how to drive traffic and how to monetize a blog.  I've learned a ton from her.

She also has some ebooks and courses she sells...and unlike a lot of other bloggers out there, they are super reasonably priced...and HIGH VALUE. They are jam packed with helpful info (and I know because I've read/taken them).  She also has a free Facebook group where bloggers help each other.  It is my favorite and most valuable FB group.

Anyway, I really embarked on this journey to earn money from my blog starting in Dec 2016 (so 20 months ago).

I was kind of frustrated last year because everything took me longer than I thought it would. I was earning around $1,500/month for a few months and just plateaued.  Not enough to live on (obviously), but some nice extra money. Then, I jumped up to $2,000 month in the middle of the year and got excited.

And, I plateaued again.  Ugh.

Then, starting in November, 1 year after I started, I really started to grow.  I made $3,100 for that month...and kept growing each month.

Fast forward to July of this year (around month 20).  Believe it or not, I made a bit over $10,000 for the month.  I couldn't believe it.  Now, that is some serious money.

This month, it looks like it will lower...a bit over $8,000 but still not bad.  And, this will mean that for the last 5 months, it's been bewteen $8,000-$10,000 and I'm happy with that.

I'm even happier because I'm pretty sure I can continue to grow it, so that amount will keep growing (on average).  My goal is to get back up to $10,000/month by the end of year and then keep growing an extra $250 (on average) each month.  That means I'd be at $12,500/month the following year, then $15,000/month in 2 years...and $20,000/month in 4 years.  If I can get there faster, I'll be happier.  We shall see.

Anyway, if you've ever thought about monetizing your blog (even just as a hobby/source of additional income), check out Carly's free course:  How to start a blog and make money from home.  You can either tap into your own blog or start a new one on a different subject.

And, please understand that you can really blog about anything - could be a hobby or passion.  I have seen people monetize so many things such as knitting, crafts, travel, personal finance, cooking and recipes, hiking, organizing, mommying (yes a new word), getting through a divorce, yoga, losing weight, eating healthier, decorating, reading, teaching people how to blog...really just about anything.

So what are you waiting for?

Well, I would have to sell out if I did it on my own Sacramento real estate blog, and everybody would see I had sold out as well, and that's just not something I care to do. Which is easy to say when you're making a lot of money in real estate, like I am.

For now, I prefer to keep my blogs advertising free. But if I wanted to blog about some other topic, maybe not. I'm just not that interested in pursuing money but then I'm one of the freaky weird people, so not the norm.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents Right.  This isn't targeted for you.  Rather, this is most appealing to many stay at home moms and/or people looking to monetize a blog as a "career."  Monetizing a real estate blog probably wouldn't make a ton of sense.  Creating a new blog could work well...but it's not for everyone.

Yes, I know I am not the norm but there are agents who do not want to sell more than 2 or 3 houses a year, and some of those guys are stay-at-home moms or dads who would love to monetize a blog. I have seen agents monetize a real estate blog, so it can be done.

I think you have done an amazing job, Debbie!

Great accomplishments Debbie Gartner , you stuck with it and look at you now! This can also be compared to an agent that sticks with it, no doubt. I for one will check out that link that you included and maybe if I find it to my liking, when I have some time, will start blogging. Not expecting much but an extra xxx $ would definetly be worth it.

Debbie,

Very encouraging story!  I have written a few blogs on ActiveRain and learn so much daily from all the great bloggers!

My main goal is to get clients/future clients recognize me and refer me business. I will however, certainly look in to monetizing blogs/facebook groups etc.

And I have also subscribed to Carly and will be following her tips for a meaningful blogging activity and I thank you for sharing info about her.

I use hardwood floors in all my rental properties and I would love to talk to "The Flooring Girl"!

Thanks!
