Agents beware!

Beware agents!

How fraudsters are trying to get your log in information may make you slip up if you are not paying attention and are alert all the time. We all know about those different scams and such that are trying to take money out of our pockets. And many of us are becoming more aware of the fraud element invading transactions as clients are contacted with different wire details than those from the settlement company.

Docusign logoLast week I got an email from Docusign, with all the Docusign logos telling me I had a document to sign. Not being aware of any upcoming advertising contracts, or transactions of mine that required my signature I was alert to the email possibly being false.

I rarely click through from an email, if ever to a website, preferring to go to the site direct be it my bank, credit card or as in this case Docusign and then looking for the document or the message on the site.

In fact I recently had an issue with one of my credit cards because they kept sending emails that you had to click to view their secure messages. When you went to the site it was not visible under messages, you had to go somewhere else on the site to find it, but they had not told you that in the email how else to read it.

In this case I went to Docusign and found no transaction or message. Going back to the email I noticed the links were just a little different to the docusign website, with a minor spelling difference. What was a little worrying was all the very correct looking logos used in the email.

Why would they want me to go to their false site you may ask?

Well, it was a phishing email to obtain my docusign credentials, once they had those, they could have accessed my Docusign and obtained transaction details, email addresses of clients etc and used those to send fake emails that clients may very well respond to being used to responding too because we have used them for the transaction or to send fake wiring instructios for any transactions still to settle.

Please be aware and over alert to these emails, especially where there may be logos in them that make you drop your guard if even for an instant, it could cost your clients dearly and maybe you as well.

So beware and never click through from an email to a site, hover over the link, see what the url code actually says and instead sign in directly on a new browser screen to the site directly. And of course, change your passwords often although it is a major pain it is secure and sensible practice.

This is so timely as many agents can be happy clickers and do not stop to think and review before they click.  Thanks very much for sharing.  Do enjoy your day

N & T, I've received a number of those emails as well. Fortunately, I wasn't expecting anything and didn't click through. I appreciate you putting this out here for those agents who may get snagged by a scammer.

Mike Cooper we all need to share the challenges as well as the triumphs to keep each other safe.

Bo Kociuba & Buster Elliott the more we share the more chance there is one of us does not fall prey to these scams and attempts.

That is correct Lisa Von Domek but sometimes they are really close and when we are in a hurry and expecting something we can slip up, we just have to be aware and remind each other to be vigilant.

I am very careful, but even so, every once in a while I am almost ready to "click" something before I do a double-take. The scams are becoming more sophisticated.

Outlook is great for catching these types of emails and sending them immediately into the spam folder.  They are instantly deleted from there.  Phishing emails are looking more authentic these days, but there are always dead giveaways.

Hi Nick and Trudy- I am so glad that you shared this!  It is too easy even for the most seasoned computer savvy person to let our guard down. Now if I receive something, I go directly to the company to ask if I was supposed to receive it.

Kevin Mackessy gmail also pushes lots of emails into spam as well, but these emails have become more and more sophisticated from the old days.

Sham Reddy it is a pain, but worse if you make a mistake.

Kathy Streib Like you I usually go to the site itself, but these emails have become more sophisticated and we need to be alert especially when we are busy.

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 it is "all fake emails" today next year it will be something else...
