When we had to call for service on our refrigerator for the second time in as many weeks and were told it would cost more than $1,200 to try fix it we decided it was time to get a new one. Our first thought was ‘it’s not that old’, then realized it was 19 years old… how time flies!
That got me thinking about how long appliances usually last. I found many different references that gave a wide range of estimated life expectancy, but it pointed out that our refrigerator had served us longer than average. It was time.
When you are buying a new home the potential future cost of replacing appliances and mechanicals is something to factor in. If you are selling a home, expect the age of the appliances and mechanicals to factor into a buyer’s perception of value. Of course always keep in mind that the quality of the appliances and mechanicals in the first place, as well as how much you use them and how well you treat them will have a big impact on life expectancy. - Refrigerators: 10-13 years
