On August 16, 2018, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits increased 1.5% to 1,311,000 units in July of 2018 from 1,292,000 units in June of 2018, and gained 4.2% from 1,258,000 in July of 2017. Single family building permits rose 1.9% to a rate of 869,000 units in July of 2018, from 853,000 units in June of 2018, and there were 410,000 multifamily building permits issued in July of 2018.
Nationwide housing starts up 0.9% to 1,168,000 units in July of 2018, from 1,158,000 units in June of 2018 but down 1.4% from 1,185,000 units in July of 2017. Single family starts higher 0.9% to a rate of 862,000 units in July of 2018 from 854,000 in June of 2018, and there were 303,000 multifamily building starts in July of 2018.
Nationwide housing completions declined at 1.7% to 1,188,000 units in July of 2018 from 1,209,000 units in June of 2018, and lower 0.8% from 1,197,000 units in July of 2017. Single family completions dropped 5.2% to a rate of 814,000 units in July of 2018, from 859,000 units in June of 2018, and there were 371,000 multifamily completions in July of 2018.
