I lived in Livonia Michigan for 23 years and loved it. Some of the positive things about Livonia is good solid school system, lots of local parks, easy access via freeway to anywhere in Metro Detroit, great city services, and good fire and police departments.
Livonia Michigan is a community in Western Wayne County that has I-275 and I-96 running through it. That makes it easy to get to the airport, Ann Arbor, or downtown Detroit. Those stops are just a 20 minute ride. So you can go see any of the professional sports teams like the Red Wings, the Lions, or the Piston in about a 20 minute ride. You can get to concert venues, or the Eastern Market (our big farmers market downtown), or to a play easily. If you travel alot then the short 20 minute ride to the airport will give you more time to spend with your family. Traveling for your job is hard enough without spending a long time on the road to get to the airport. Living in Livonia will cut down your travel time.
Here is a quick little aerial video of Livonia. I would call Livonia both a blue collar and white collar community. You will find homes that have basements, 2 car garages, brick exteriors, 3 bedrooms, and one plus baths. You will find both ranch homes, colonials, tri -level and quad level homes. You won't find many bungalows, or tudors in Livonia. Nor will you find big luxury estate homes here. Yes there are some homes that sit on large lots, but many of Livonia homes are subdivision homes.
You will find that most of Livonia subdivisions and homes are well manicured and nicely kept up. There are not very many homes in the city that I would call a disaster. The City of Livonia has a vacant home inspection and they use it to make sure a home is not bringing the whole neighborhood down. If a house is breaking the city codes for not cutting the grass, or having an abandoned vehicle in the yard, the cities' code enforcement officer will be out there making sure they clean the mess up. They won't let one house or one home owner ruin or run down a neighborhood. You are not going to find abandoned or burnt out houses in Livonia.
It's not a rural community with homes with lots of privacy or acreage. Livonia is an urban community, that has all the conveniences you are probably already used to. There will be pharmacies, restaurants, grocery stores, fast food joints, banks, doctors, and dentist offices all within a mile or two of your home in Livonia. You will find most of the big box stores you are used to within a 20 minute ride. Livonia has several large strip malls and an indoor mall too. Plus you can get to several other large malls within a 20-25 minute ride.
If you are moving to Michigan then Livonia is a community you should check out because of the low crime. You won't find gangs running the streets or rampant crime. I would say Livonia's crime is random crime or domestic issue's. A murder is rare in the city. A carjacking or mugging is even rare. You do not have that type of criminal element in the city. Your children will be safe playing outside. You will be able to walk safely to your car, or around at night. You can job in the park as a single women and not be afraid of being attacked.
If you chose to find out what Livonia Michigan is like I think you will be pleased. It's a nice safe community in Wayne County that has good schools and low crime. An easy drive to Ford Motor company in Dearborn or just about anywhere you want to go.
