Our Ocean has Gas!

Our Ocean has Gas!

There have been a flurry of reports online, and on the NextDoor network, in recent days regarding concerns about smelling gas in my area of Carlsbad and also in Oceanside. And no doubt numerous calls to San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) and the police.

Naturally, the first thought people have is of a gas leak somewhere nearby, which of course raises concerns about a potential explosion. It happens!

Carlsbad beachIt turns out the problem is not a natural gas leak the utility company needs to deal with - the fault is our gassy Pacific Ocean.

They call it outgassing. I can think of other terms but we’ll leave it at that!

Time to break out the Gas-X!

They don’t seem to know exactly what is causing the ocean to emit this smell, although one suggestion I saw was the rotting vegetation due to record high ocean temps.

But they say it’s non-toxic, and it’s happened before.

This was a new one for me. It’s been all over the news and police departments have been busy responding to reports as well and reassuring residents.

Just one other thing to be aware of living by the sea! I wonder if this will be a new disclosure?!

Jeff,

I happen to have known that.  There is a street in LA above an underground river and there is gas there as our client found out when the foudationgs were being poured.  It was an easy fix.  The architects created metall palm tree sculptures that let the natural gas escape into the atmosphere.    I have not heard of anything like that near us, and I have a feeling that the salt marshes do the job of letting it escape...A

Jeff well my friend rotting vegetables would cause me to expel some gas, so the ocean has every right to do that as well

Ron and Alexandra Seigel

What a clever way to solve a potentially smelly problem.  I haven't noticed the issue despite being not far from the beach. Too busy to pay attention I guess.

Have a wonderful weekend!

That sounds terrible!

The Florida coast has the nasty red tide thing killing all the sea life and you have this.

What's happening to our oceans?

Hi Sharon Tara

We had some red tide issues, too, earlier this year. And then you hear about all the plastic and stuff floating around or see it getting washed up on the shore!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Good evening Jeff - not that is really a new one on me.  Don't joke, you might have to disclose it.

The gas smell can happen in many places.  We just closed a home that had a "gas" smell connected with the running water.  After "shocking" the well, the gas smell is gone.

I heard about this on NPR. Wow, that's and interesting thought. You are probably going to have to disclose this. But it seems it is a rare occurrence. Hopefully.

Hi Grant Schneider

Well it was a first for me. If this happened in my area before I missed it.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Lynnea Miller  Now that's interesting. Glad it was a simply solution. I did some more reading and outgassing happens in all sorts of ways...new learning for me
