Watch Out For This Scam!
I just had a client call me yesterday and asked me about a letter she received in the mail. I want to share this information to everyone so you all know this scam is going on.
I sold my client a home 2 years ago. A few months ago, she received a letter in the mail from an “HOA company” that said she owed back dues from when the house was built in 2002. She discarded the letter without much thought. A couple of days ago, she received another letter from the same “HOA company” telling her that her account had been turned over to a collection company and she owed $1312. She called her lender and me and we did some investigating. First, we told her any HOA dues that were owed would not be sent to a collection agency. Second, we noticed her name was addressed as last name first, first name last. I looked back to see if the house is in an HOA and it is not and never has been. It stated that on her executed contract and no by-laws were collected by the title company from an HOA before closing. We figured these are people combing the records of the local tax agency and finding people, especially single ladies, to send out letters to in order to see if they can collect money from gullible people. Luckily, she called us first before sending any money.
Realtors, make sure your clients know this. It’s so sad that we even have to tell people all the ways they need to watch out for scams but in this day and age, it’s an unfortunate truth.
Have a great day everyone and watch out for this scam.
