After reading a “troubling” post this morning written by Margaret Rome, I thought I’d share my thoughts on this topic.  As I read that post, my blood began boiling and by the time I was at the end of the post, I was boiled over!!

It made me think about the many unsuspecting agents who receive a review of less than a 5-star ranking. Anything less than 5 stars is questionable to most potential buyers and/or sellers.  It’s human instinct to want only the BEST.  

Herein lies the problem. We have only a couple of options when the review is less than 5 stars. We can delete it; or leave it and take the chance of losing new business; or we can put on our “pissed off” hat.  I like the look of that hat on me!!!

What I would do is respond to that review.  I think “every review deserves a response,” and that’s common courtesy. When someone communicates with you, you respond, whether it’s online or offline.

My response for any comment less than 5 would be a polished and positive version reflecting why you might have received that number.  Tread lightly with the 4-Star, but as you strut your stuff in high heels you have the right to wear brass knuckles when needed. When you see that 1-Star dress for success….high heels and brass knuckles! 

This is your reputation at stake.  You cannot bury a negative review. Most people will read every review you have, and it only takes ONE to blur one’s vision!!  You know without a doubt THAT ONE review is THE ONE they will remember after having read all 60 reviews!!

Don’t allow that to happen.  You are not anyone’s lackey. You are a professional who does his/her job and does it well or you’d NOT have any 5 Star reviews.  The fact that it bothers you shouts out that it’s not deserved. Respond to it firmly, positively and professionally.

Those are my thoughts for the moment….. now I need to calm down and let my blood stop boiling!! Just saying….

Just be yourself. Honestly, the rating effectiveness are over exaggreted. Few bother to look at it as a way to judge people. If you have ware to sell you are worth 20 stars. As buyer agent it is through referrals. Most people in Silicon Valley skip that internet stuff going direct person to person. This is supposed to be where all the technology comes from.....

People do read them.... those people are potential future buyers and sellers.... many do over-react, but if trash is stated about an agent who has never met the person who posts the review, it's just wrong.... it's wrong on many levels... Sam Shueh

The site that makes the sound of a dog when you step on it's tail is a shake-down site, nothing more.

When I was in the trenches, it was a pain for me.  I have countless things I could say about that site, and nothing of them positive.  Oh, like how they ran COMPETITORS ads through my "profile"  - "Hey Carla sucks, but here's 5 more agents, and lookie . . . they have better "stars" than she does" (I'm paraphrasing).  They COMMANDERED my URL website name, and added their barking dog .com name . . . and profitted from it, selling ads to my competitors.  

I regret to this day that I joined the site.

Yep those sorts of reviews do make one's blood boil, especially when you know they are not deserved and are retaliatory. I think a polite and professional rebuttal will say it best...and then getting more 5-star reviews!!

I'm calling you when I need some serious muscle Barbara! It is interesting that some people think reviews are a one-way street and that they, by rights, will get the last say. I like the rebuttal idea and will now go and take a look for myself to see if anything needs to be done. Get those brass knuckles ready, just in case...!

A star raiting online of 4.2 or above is considered to be excellent.

 

It is just as important to show people reading the reviews how you handle issues that come up. We are all human and problems do arise from time-to-time and it's never the problem as much as the solution. Five stars can look too curated.

Reviews are important for sure. I also wonder about the reviews that don't get posted but are by word of mouth. You ask a friend, colleague, etc if they have heard of Agent Amy and they have more than a negative mouthful to spew. Sometimes we don't know or hear those reviews. Watch the step in those high heels.

I often wonder what clients think when they don't leave 5 stars, and it is interesting when they leave 5 for some and not others, we do need to also look at the feedback and evaluate but also need to counter those that are unfair.

Can't agree more with responding to it firmly.  Correct the misinterpretations and provide color to the other side of the story.  Then let others judge who was right and wrong.
