Hurricane Lane Maui, Big Surf, Winds, and Rain is Here
So we are under Hurricane warming for the Big Island and Maui. Winds predicted with 145 miles hour have been downgraded to 100 miles per hour for Maui, but there is a good chance Hurricane Lane will stay offshore, leaving Maui with tropical storm conditions. There is also surf predicted to reach 15 to 25 ft, the last hurricane that came through did a lot of damage to boat harbors.
As I am writing this update, rains have arrived and are filling in across the island. Schools and parks are closed, emergency shelters have been open and we are ready come what may. We will have a disruption with shipping, large ships have been ordered out to sea.
So here is my unprofessional take on this storm. Maui in recorded history has never been hit by a hurricane. With Haleakala Crater extending out of the sea at 10,000 ft, when the hurricane winds hit off the crater there is a force that drives the hurricane away from the island. Ok, I know I am not a scientist that is my best guess.
So pray for Hawaii that this hurricane stays offshore and everyone is safe.
