Thursday Hurricane Lane Rain in Kona, Hawaii

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

The photo above was shot at 10:30 AM, August 23rd, from Kona Haven Coffee as Laura pulled out into traffic on her Harley Davidson.

Initial reports on the path and timing for Hurricane Lane in Hawaii had us expecting the hurricane ramifications at 2 AM Thursday morning. However, as of 5 PM Thursday night, there is very little going on in Kailua-Kona. A tad overcast, a drizzle now and then, but not much in the way of winds or rain.

Until I looked at the National Hurricane Center map and dug into that website. I am posting this to drip on Thursday night, so when you read this, there won't be an update unless I have internet. Hurricane Lane is now expected to pass by Kona sometime between 8 PM Thursday night and 2 AM Friday morning.

Other parts of the Big Island have experienced flooding and enormous amounts of water, with bridges collapsing and trees falling over because the roots are too soaked. There is no place to go but a shelter if it does serious damage, but I am hoping it doesn't come to that.

You can see a ton more photographs and updates in my personal blog today at this link: Hurricane Lane Conditions Thursday at Kailua-Kona Hawaii.

I hope you are OK, Elizabeth.  I'm watching the news and it looks like the big island is getting tons of rain.

Dorie Dillard It's been a bit freaky to see all of this destruction happening on the east side of Hawaii Island but the Kona side so far has been spared.

Gabe Sanders Well, you are much more used to dealing with hurricanes and tropical storms than I am. I was a bit worried but did batten down the hatches. Better safe than sorry is my motto.

Yes, I've had my share of these storms which is why I worry for you.

Nina Hollander I got up at 4 AM this morning to see if my lanai was still here, and everything was calm. Went back to bed and was jolted awake at 6:30 by my Apple Watch ringing off the hook. I just said Hello, LOL, when I answered and it was some "investor" who sounds like she wanted to lowball one of my listings, asking me to show her my listing even though she has an agent. Under the circumstances, I was as nice as I could be, which was actually nicer than my thoughts.

Nicer than our thoughts ... I can relate to that!

I'll take California earthquakes over hurricanes all day long. Perhaps I say that because it is what I am used to - having lived in California my entire life. Waiting to see when/if it will hit and wondering what the damage would be ... stressful!

So glad your side of the Big Island was spared. I am now keeping my fingers crossed for Honolulu where my daughter lives. They may not be so lucky.

Kathleen Daniels It is difficult to track this storm, too, because everybody has a different slant, opinion, and the movement / speed is unpredictable. What everybody in Kona wants an answer to is the simple question: what time will it hit Kona?

It's not over yet as tropical storm warnings are in effect, but Kona is fairly calm right now. I can see the surf in Kailua Bay, and it's UP, but not super unusual. A bit of rain showers off and on. Nothing at all like what people east of me are dealing with. Those are the people to worry about.

Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor® Yes, we seem to be OK but I have not seen any contractors today. Texted the GC and no response. His excuse will probably be since everything is closed, public, utilities, schools, government offices, and his workers are coming from Oceanview, they are taking the day off too.

I hope Honolulu will be spared, too, for your daughter's sake and the sake of all of the residents of Oahu.

I'm glad you are posting these updates, Elizabeth.  News reports yesterday made it appear the west side of Hawaii was going to be hit most significantly.  However, when I woke, the scenes were coming mainly from Hilo side.  I'm relieved you are safe!

Hi Elizabeth- I've learned a lot studying the maps of Hawaii!  Glad you are safe and sound. Larry and I said today that at least in Florida, we can, if we're crazy enough, sit in traffic on 95 or the turnpike to try to escape. You guys have nowhere to go. Please continue to be safe.

Glad to hear you're doing well in Kona.  On Maui there was plenty of action in Lahaina with 2 brush fires before the rains hit.  The north shore had some wind and rain, and upcountry has trees down, much like a regular winter storm.
