What's the Balance between Men and Women Emotionally?

Men vs WomenSome where in my drive between Milwaukee and Minot yesterday I was listening to a very interesting talk show featuring a female Christian comedian.

She shared several personal stories of grief and dealing with grief but she said one thing that really stood out to me. She said:

"People say women are much more emotional then men... yea... if you DON'T count anger!"

WOW! how true is that?

We're taught how to express emotions differently, historically. Women have been allowed to express a fuller range, men were supposed to be stoic.  I suspect we all feel the full range of emotions but express them according to our upbringing and our ability to overcome them.

The older I get, the more I realize that men are just as emotional as women, if not more so. In our neighborhood full of men I'm either one of the guys or part of the furniture - not sure which - so when they're talking they forget that I'm listening.

They may not break down and sob, but they get teary eyed a lot, especially when talking about past pets, friends who have passed on, experiences they had in war time, friends who turned out to be false, etc.

Morning Bob.

In my former profession you could not show emotion, no matter the circumstances.  Now, I'm just as emotional as anyone on the planet.

My experience, Bob, is that both men and women are emotional and both can express anger. The difference is in how we do it, which comes from social conditioning about what is "acceptable" for men versus women. I worry that such generalizations only serve to continue gender stereotypes.

Very true Nina Hollander but some generalizations are fairly accurate such as a young man when angry is more likely to express it physically then an older man. I'm very thankful that my faith has transformed much of my anger into compassion and understanding these days.

Hi Bob, funny on Saturday night we were out with out best friends for dinner ad was back at their house for some wine.  For the first time ever, His wife got mad at her husband for the first time in front of us in 50 years.  A new side of her I ever saw.

That must have been very uncomfortable Will Hamm . Even if he deserved it (and I don't know if he did) it's to bad she didn't hold back until you had left.

An individual kind of thing...though anger seems to be an easy expression of emotion by many men in divorce.

Is it anger or indignation? That is what prevails at our house?

Yes, for sure.

I was talking to Mom this morning, she was driving to the office.

Somehow I distracted her or upset - she got a ticket just in front of our office.
