Throwback Thursday: Don't EVER Give Up Your Blog

"Think twice before you do something you might regret."

On October 30, 2016 I published the following content on my AR Blog.  This is one I thought worth bringing back.

* * * * *

"Last Friday I published a blog post entitled My Blog Was My Storefront.  It was a short, true account, of my experience in blogging.

One of my biggest regrets, though, is having abandoned that blog and not renewing the domain name when I retired. When my husband died in 2011, I was tired and decided to take a year off to rest and regroup.  As time went on, I didn't see myself ever getting back into real estate sales again, so I let it go.  I was not thinking clearly.

HUGE HUGE HUGE mistake.  I had hundreds of articles on that blog and amazing search engine rankings. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to go back and retrieve some of the content.

I have regretted not keeping the site active many many many times.  Maybe every day!

Anyway, my point is... don't ever ever ever let your blog go, especially if it's working!     It is your storefront.  If you don't want to work the store anymore... give it a rest but don't abandon it.  At the very least, you can sell it!

Think twice before you do something you will regret... then think again!"

Please heed my advice.

I can appreciate your regretful message.  I switched domain names because someone had told me that having my name +AZHomes.com wasn't a good domain so I switched.  LOST lots of ranking, switched to relocatingtoscottsdale.com where there was a boatload of competition, switched again back to something simple. UGH!

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel ,
I think that's great.  You'll never work a day in your life with that attitude.

I have an old non-WordPress website and blog that I haven't been updating.  It has a lot of content.  Recently I've been getting leads from it in spite of it not being updated and not being mobile-friendly.  I can only guess that Google changed algorithms and it now ranks well enough to pull in some leads.  So...I agree.  Don't give up your old blog.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat ,
That is a great great great suggestion!!! If only I had done that.  I probably should do that with my AR blog now.  One never knows what might happen to the platform.

And, thanks so much for the Feature in the Old Farts Club!!!

I can relate to that regret. When I left real estate my contacts were in a Top Producer program. Thinking I would not need that again, I deleted it.

How dumb could I get? Some of those folks might have been interested in hiring a copywriter. And worse - a year or so later an agent approached me, wanting to buy that now non-existent list.

Carol, thanks for sharing this. It's funny how life has it's highs and lows and we make decisions based on our current situation and feelings.  However, when we look back, we can see that life changes and sometimes circles back.

Oh, Carol, I am so sorry to hear this. I cannot imagine all of the hard work, blood, sweat and tears you put into your blog. Sometimes when other things in our lives consume every ounce of our being, we make decisions that we feel are right at the time. There's a reason for your decision - perhaps it's given you more time on the golf course or more time to give to us here in the Rain?

Sage advice but, don't beat yourself up about it, Carol. Take solace in knowing that you helped many others to not abandon their blog - we so appreciate your giving spirit.
