Jumping Off a 50-Foot Cliff at South Point Hawaii

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

If you ask Gary Thomas in Key West, he will tell you he has the southernmost point in Florida, but that is not true. It is the southernmost point in the continental U.S. but not in the United States. Nope, that honor belongs to the Big Island in Hawaii. Our houseguests, the exclusive buyer's agent Josh Amolsch from the Elizabeth Weintraub Team in Sacramento and his beautiful fiancée Vika, drove us to South Point Hawaii yesterday.

The point of that 3-hour-plus roundtrip was to watch Vika jump off a nearly 50-foot high cliff into the ocean. She was determined and motivated to accomplish her goal. Along the way, I guess it hit Josh that I would write about the event. He said if he did not jump, everybody would know and he would appear as a wimp and, as we all know, Josh is no wimp. So, leap he did. And we have a great video of it in my personal blog today at this link: Photos and Video of 12 Meter Cliff Jumping at South Point Hawaii.

That's quite a leap! I wouldn't have done it, and I give a lot of credit to anyone who does!

Kat Palmiotti I harbor absolutely zero desire to jump off that cliff. There are so many other ways to die why add a real possibility to that list?

Come on Elizabeth.  We could do it together holding hands.

I'd love it!  I've been to both southernmost points.  The one in Hawaii, and the one in Key West.

Hi Elizabeth- Me? Jump off a cliff???? Not even if Robert Redford and I were replaying the cliff diving scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid would I do that.  How short are you??? I'm pushing 5'3".

Myrl Jeffcoat I have been to both too but Florida is careful to state "continental" and not just the United States. It is amusing because sometimes people forget that Hawaii is part of the U.S. Well, Hawaiians do not forget but mainlanders do.

Kathy Streib I'm with you. I'm shorter than you are, I guess. About 60 1/2 inches. It is only apparent to me when I'm trying to reach an item off the top shelf of a cabinet or standing next to a super tall person, like Josh!

Although when I meet people for the first time, they often comment by saying they thought I was much taller. I never think about people in terms of height. Probably because almost everybody is taller. Used to my own height so I don't ponder it.

That's so funny. I pictured you at about 5'4. I have no idea why. Just did. Maybe it's your statuesque personality!!!!

Oh my gosh, Elizabeth. The thought of jumping made me cringe. When I watch the video, I cringed more!

As for the commentary on your height... I'm just 5'3" and people always say they are surprised because they think of me as much taller. I always tell them that in my head I'm 5'7" and I guess that translated in how I carry myself and then how people perceive me.

When I was in college, I dated a midshipman at the Coast Guard Academy who was 6'4" and I think we looked odd to the world with the height differential.

HI Elizabeth... don't know how much men prefer short versus taller, but with my female cousins all at 5'8" or taller, I feel like a runt next to them. I'd be happy if I were 5'6" or 5'7".

Nina Hollander I have many French relatives who are shorter than me. I am very happy with my height. Plus, I have freedom to wear any high heel I can walk in. Super tall women don't have this advantage.

The average height for women is 5'4".

Well, at below 5'4", I'm below average... I hate being below average in anything! As for high heels, my feet have not been able handle those in decades, so a bit more height could do me well!

Nina Hollander I am below average for many things, like I weigh less than average. I age less than average women. Not bad to be less than average.

I look at it a bit differently... in that I age better, my weight is maintained better, etc. making me above average!

Are you really only 60 1/2" tall.  That's only 5 feet 1/2 inch.  You seem much taller than that. . .Perhaps, it's your attitude!  LOL
