City of Scottsdale News Release

One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure

There is wisdom in the old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” What if instead of burying our trash in a landfill, we recirculated it back into the economy? What if we began to regard “waste” as a “resource”?

Scottsdale’s Green Building Lecture Series kicks off its new season with “The Circular Economy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Reconsider and Re-imagine,” a discussion of the reuse and recovery of materials and products we use every day.

In a traditional linear economy, products are made, used and disposed of in the landfill. In a circular economy, resources are kept in use for as long as possible to extract maximum value, then recovered to regenerate new materials. Circular economies divert waste from landfills, reduce environmental impacts, conserve energy and water, save money, and create jobs.

Come hear about community initiatives, business opportunities and what you can do to support a circular economy.

Our featured speaker is John Trujillo, principal of Circonomy Solutions. As former City of Phoenix Public Works Director, he reinvented the city’s waste collection and recycling programs to dramatically move the city toward zero-waste. John will share business and public sector efforts to recover material resources for reuse and regeneration in an economically viable and environmentally compatible way.

John will be joined by Steve Caldwell, Vice President of Operations for GreenSheen Paint. Steve is responsible for the national expansion of latex paint recycling facilities. He will discuss the process of recycling used latex paint (otherwise destined for the landfill) into a premium quality architectural grade paint.

This free program will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road. RSVPs are not needed.

This lecture is one in a series that includes:

  • Dec. 6, 2018 –Future Proofing: Carbon Neutrality and Energy Efficiency in New & Existing Buildings
  • Feb. 7, 2019 – Living an Edible Landscape Life
  • April 4, 2019 – Radiant Cooling and Other Alternatives to Conventional Air Conditioning
  • June 6, 2019 – Cutting Edge Residential and Commercial Green High-Performance Buildings

It would be interesting to follow up on that community to see if they had any other issues pop up due to the landfill Endre Barath, Jr. !  I'll write a post about this lecture.  This one is part of a regular series of lectures hosted by the City of Scottsdale,  which I've been a part of before.  Love their topics!

This lecture is aimed at getting people to think of re-using items or repurposing them instead of sending them to a landfill.  Landfills eventually fill up and cities need to do more to reduce what goes into them because eventually they fill up and you'll have to start another landfill.

Thank you Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR !  It's very worthwhile to raise awareness of what we can do on our own to help/encourage a circular economy.  I'll write a post after I attend.  Thank you for commenting!

I applaud Scottsdales' efforts to use renewable resources, reduce, reuse, reinvent, re-imagine and reconsider whenever possible. I would LOVE if something like this was offered in my area.

Pat, I so understand.  It's frustrating when we are more forward thinking than our cities and towns.  I checked and you do have a US Green Building Council Chapter.  Everything I see on their site is commercial related projects.  But, that's a start.  That's how we started in Phoenix.  Our chapter began in 2002 I think and finally in 2009, a residential committee was created that I've been volunteering ever since.  It takes time, but if enough people are interested, it gets started.  So if you are interested in this topic, start asking around.  Visit EcoBroker.com and GreenResourceCouncil.org to find like-minded agents who might be interested in a speaker series.  You just never know!  It only takes one person asking around :)

Good morning Jan - I was amazed at what things can be recycled.  We have a building done by an architect here in Armonk that uses most recycled material.

Scottsdale’s Green Building Lecture Series is a great way to educate by providing valuable information with “The Circular Economy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Reconsider and Re-imagine,” event. I hope it is successful and other cities and communities follow its lead. This is a great idea and program to initiate to schools, businesses, and homeowners.

Truly, this is a superb idea!

Thank you so much Patricia Feager for your thoughts and input. I couldn't agree more!  More businesses need to invest in products that have already been recycled, not buy new products if possible.  The more we do this the more demand, the better the economy and environment!  Imagine creating new jobs in that economy!

Jan Green - Something I didn't even think about was "creating new jobs in the economy!" Now that's very exciting! I hope your blog post gets featured on AR. It would be great if every agent made an effort to recycle and implement some great ideas about recycling starting with their own home office.

You're such a doll Patricia Feager !  I doubt it gets featured as local posts seldom get traction, but I really appreciate your sentiment.  This new buzz word "circular economy" isn't a new concept.  Back then, if you didn't have a gargabe disposal, you deposted food waste in your compost pile (and down it went.)  Lots of folks still do this, but not everyone.  think about that circular economy!    Okay, in all seriousness, I know they are creating new jobs within a circular economy and it's only going to increase - woo hoo!
