How I Spent My Summer Vacation
Real estate agents don’t like to leave town - something always happens when they do. In fact, my husband likes to say that I should leave more often since I always seem to get new business when I’m gone.
But there is one get-away I never want to miss - visiting with good friends at their lake house in Lake Burton, Georgia.
Yes, I never heard of it either until I went there. Lake Burton is the largest of several lakes that were originally the Tallulah River. The original town of Burton is now buried underwater. Our friends lived in Atlanta for many years and Lake Burton (nearest town is Clayton) is a popular vacation spot for the well-to-do in Atlanta.
Homes on Lake Burton are not that different from homes in Winnetka or the North Shore - magnificent and pricey. Originally, there were only small cabins on these lots but in the past 20 years they have been torn down with much larger homes going in (just like the North Shore.) Prices range from $300,000 for an old cabin off the lake to over $20 million. Notable folks that live there part time are Nick Saban (University of Alabama football coach,) country star Alan Jackson, and a renter named Julie Roberts.
The lake is located in the very northeast portion of George near the North Carolina border in the Blue Ridge mountains. There are several quaint towns nearby with good antiquing, tons of hiking paths including the Appalachian Trail, and some really good restaurants.
But I love going for the serenity and laziness I can allow myself to indulge in. Basking on the dock for hours (with sunscreen and umbrella, of course) is a fine way to unwind. Plus we can go boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, and treat ourselves to wine as the day winds down. No plans or schedules or places we have to be.
When the weather in the Chicago area dips to where it seems impossible to live, I whip out these photos and videos and feel the warmth of the
sun on my body all over again.
